Yeah that first one is just the ticket. Unfortunately (well probably fortunately really) we were first on route so had no one to photo in front. Bet the step was interesting with ice on! We had a thick coating of powder which was pretty sketchy in places but at least we could put an axe shaft...

Is it not dangerous to stalk deer at this time of year? Certainly worth the risk though to get such cracking shots.

    Shell Bay Panorama.

Is there some sort of moire or joining effect on the sea or is it the reflection from the clouds? May just be my screen too. It's an awesome shot though. How many degrees of field (is that a real term?) is it?

Interesting idea. But I can never seem to express the severity of the steepness in a photo, for example (ok I'm the one in the photo, but if I hadn't been leading I wouldn't have taken the photo any differently): Here the slope going ahead is 45-50 degrees, cliff on the left and 50-60 on the...

They are actually yellow/orange tents. I was already in my bivi bag and really didnt want to get out to take frame it without the tents in! Thanks for the positive comments everyone!

Aiguille du Midi is about 3700m actually! I find the light and weather changes so quick out there that it makes it hard to get a shot with the feeling I want. I think it helps staying up there for long periods to have more chances to get the right shot. We tended to spend about 3 days biviing...

    Mountain Photography

Hi guys, just wanted some C&C on my photos. I find that taking photos of mountains it's very hard not to make it look like just another mountain. Also I find it really hard to get any sense of scale, even when including people. So any tips would be cool. North Face of the Grand Jorasses...

    Amdcal remote usage

Hi guys, got a bit of an issue that I can't seem to solve myself. I've tried internet searching too, to no avail. Basically I have amdcal running on a box in the office. It works locally, but when accessing it remotely via ssh it cannot find the gpu device. It requires a running...

Anyone gone from a Macbook Pro to a plain Macbook?

Natively 64bit? Not really. Only unix, cocoa and some applications. The kernel, drivers and some applications are 32bit. Snowleopard will make things truely 64bit. Also 64bit does not nessicarily mean faster.

    Should I get a DSLR?

I do about the same as you D.P. Scotland when I can get there and Alps in the summer. Certainly on the stuff we did this year (all between PD+ and AD although chamonix so generally hard for the grade) the guys who had bridges never took them out of their bags. Aside: We had a nice 12 hour epic...

    Should I get a DSLR?

Ok, probably a commonly asked question, and I know I want a DSLR and can afford one, but should I get one? Most of my photography is done whilest mountaineering or climbing. This means every gram of weight is a premium. Also a large camera is likely to live in the top pocket of my bag. Semi...

Complaining to an ISP about abuse?

Reviewing my logs tonight, and I find some pillock has been trying to attack my local ssh server, simply by trying different usernames! Anyway, needless to say I think something needs to be done to stop people from doing stupid things like this. So I would like to complain to the attacker's ISP...

Spec me a flavour of linux

Yeah but i386 bins will be fine for his hardware. Also optimizations mean bigger bins which means more ram usage (assuming not using Os in which case it isnt optimised for a specific computer much anyway). I use gentoo on my T22, but thats an 800MHz PIII with 256mb ram.

Spec me a flavour of linux

Installing gentoo is one step, just a very big one. I recon something like arch would be good. Not gentoo because you don't want to be compiling for ages on it. But with arch you can build a nice minimal system.

    Anyone got a gentoo cheatsheet?

Thats a lot of errors. Are you using the onboard sound? Is it the nivida sound you are trying to use. At the moment it appears the only sound driver modules that are compiled are ac97 and intel8x0. Although this shouldn't cause those errors, without the correct modules, it's never going to work...
