AFAIK the subframe is made from pressed steel but I don't think that in itself is the problem. The issue seems to be twofold, firstly the quality of the steel has been called into question and also the quality of any rust proofing is being criticized.

Yes, following further advice from our independent Merc engineer I am going to take it back to Mercedes Basingstoke. If I get an independent repair then they will refuse to carry out any goodwill work should other problems occur further down the line.

I'm less concerned now about Mercedes sorting it out than I was this morning but I would like to get an independent opinion about the state of the subframe before I take it to the dealership.

The report doesn't say it's dangerous "only" that it's major and needs immediate repair. I wish it were clearer although I don't want to drive it except to the dealership.
