    Wiring to RS232 Pins?

I have a project (IDE HDD Recovery) where I want to connect some wires to the pins where the master\slave selector jumpers sit. An online walkthrough I saw recommended these like widgets: http://www.frys.com/product/2065227 But the site is in the US and I've struggled to find an...

PC for my Parents, please critique.

Yeah, I was looking at Dell to begin with. Kind of galling seeing what they were offering for the price! That said, you guys are indeed right. Its an 8 hour round trip to visit my parents, which is a long way to go to repair the cup-holder. Dell + warranty it is then. Thanks anyway...

PC for my Parents, please critique.

£650 to spend. Doesn't need to do 3d gaming, but will be used for browsing, movies, photo editing e.t.c. Any thoughts?

    Netbook for WOW

@markuss i think the point is that it will be fine running about in fairly empty areas, but as soon as the game gets busy (not really reflected in said video), i.e. instances, cities or raid it will not be particularly playable.

<£300 For Word, Excel, Ableton, movies, music & browsing

I'm going on a trip and I would like to take as much of the functionality of my desktop with me as possible - ideally in a fairly small package. I realise that modern gaming isn't really an option at this price level. Can I get something that isn't junk for <£300?

    Homeplugs question

I currently have a homeplug powerline adaptor pair connecting me to my router\modem. My flatmate would also like the same in her room. Whats the best way to do this. Do we need 4 homeplugs? Or does three work (one in my room, one her room, one at the router\modem). If three works then do we...

Best way to get 2tb external

I need more space for archiving DV & also for backups. I don't want to put more than 1 more HDD in my PC because its hot and quiet right now and I don't want it to get hotter or louder. I'm not confident about the reliability of current gen disk that are bigger than 1tb. So... I'm...

    What should I spend?

Ok, I need to buy a new monitor in the next two weeks, as I am finally leaving my trusty but enormous CRT behind. I made a couple of threads re. some fairly low end TN screens which I wanted to use as a stop-gap until I could get something a bit more up-market. Unexpectedly I've ended up...

Samsung T200, good for £148 shipped?

OK, lets say I push the boat out a wee bit and go for a 1080p 22". I still don't want to spend too much as I can't afford to spend enough to get anything other than a TN - as I say this is something of a stop-gap display. The VH226 looks a bit bleedy, but maybe thats par for the course at this...

    Backups & Redundancy advice

OK, lets say I'm going to backup essential data to an external repository, say a couple of 1.5 TB HDDs in an esata caddy\NAS of some sort. A full blown fileserver is probably excessive for my needs, but tempting all the same! Does it make more sense to backup once to each ext HDD, like Bledd...

    Backups & Redundancy advice

So if you are running two disk system anyway, where one disk is your backup then what would be the disadvantage of switching to Raid 1? CPU overhead? I'm not too worried about recovering from accidental deletions etc, although that obviously is a plus, I'm mainly concerned about preserving...

    Backups & Redundancy advice

As I mentioned in my other thread I'm just recovering from a HDD death and thinking about ways to avoid data loss in the future. I do a lot of video work so I have GBs & GBs of data and its become sort of impractical to backup onto DVDRs. What are my other options? What kind of media do...

7200.11 Reboot Death, Any Successful Repairs?

My 7200.11 stopped detecting in the BIOS recently and took 500Gb of data with it. It still spins up OK, and certainly sounds fine, but as I say it doesn't detect at all. The PCB on the underside of the drive, which I assume is the controller, looks quite swappable and I was wondering how...

    Testing read\write reliability.

Crapo Event log shows many: "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort0." I'm surprised the system is still functioning as well as it is. Aside from a few corrupted downloads Vista has been running 24/7 without crashing, and I've also been playing L4D without problems...

    Testing read\write reliability.

Can anyone suggest an app that will test whether or not my HDD is scrambling data when it reads\writes it from\to disk? If there isn't an automated test, I'll maybe just try making & then CRC checking a ton of giant RARs. I'm trying to troubleshoot a problem with some file corruption. I...
