    ITX NAS Case

I'm building my own NAS and I am after a 4 bay dedicated NAS case that will fit a mini/ micro ITX or ITX board . I'm looking for something similar to the turnkey solutions like Synology 4 bays in terms of size. Any recommendations welcome please

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

I know you were all eagerly waiting for my feedback ;) Yep, 5700G works fine as does 1TB Crucial SSD. Well, everything installed, W10 loaded and the cute little box is superb. Thanks to a member for this. I'm very happy

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

Thanks Micky The seller confirms and has shown me screen shots of it running a 5700G. Once I have it running I'll update again

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

Sorted out with an ASRock x300, used but mint with some bits installed like WiFi and memory. Going to use a AMD 5700G, 16GB Mem and a 512GB SSD and see how it goes. Less than £400 the lot so I'll see how that goes for 1080p gaming.

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

I’ve tried the Steam Deck and it was ok on my Samsung monitor and BT kbd and mouse. I’ve never got on with the controllers on gaming consoles. If using a kbd and mouse was easy I’d try one. Being a Mac Mini M1 user I have plenty of power but of course limited game choice. This is as much as a...

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

Thanks for the replies folks. Sorry for the delay but I didn’t get notified. A few things to check out so thanks again I’m only limited by space because I want the smallest setup possible.

Mini PC for Gaming at average levels

I'm looking for a gaming PC that will cope with modern games but not at top level in terms of performance. Which I don't expect from the tiny mini PCs I se. I don't mind dialling back the performance. Limited for space a NUC type computer or one of similar size. I had a Steam Deck which was...

USB Caddy/rack for 2.5" External USB Drives

I have several 2.5" drives, four to be precise, that I have put in a home made wire rack. But I would really prefer a manufactured rack that the drives can sit in and just plug the USB cables in each drive in the back. I thought it would be easy to find but I was wrong. Plenty of caddys with...

    Small Quiet PC for Plex

I was going to buy a NAS but frankly they are way overpriced IMO for a simple storage device. All I want it for is to run as a Plex server. My son has a HP Microserver gen 8 which is dual core with 8GB of mem and a couple of hard drives running Unraid OS and it does great at transcoding and...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

Love that Avalon.... spoken with some passion...... and good stuff...thank you I agree about the HP... I've built plenty of PCs in my time so quite happy to build one rather than buy a microserver after doing research so I concur with your comments. Mainly as I dont intend to do anything else...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

My son says the same about his as well. Looking at a Gen 8 with the standard Celeron 2.3 processor and 10Gb mem for around £220 which seems oK to me. Its "only" a 2 core processor of course but I understand you can carefully upgrade to 4 core without needing fans

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

Although I dont have any 4k or any particular rush to see any more and more movies are in 4k. It could be another 3D of course but its reasonable to say 4k is eventually going to be the new 1080p. Thats my only concern with a NAS solution with the lack of hardware decoding grunt. Hence my...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

I supose so. 2nd disk would be a failover but would contain the folders still and service would continue. But I do see the value as well of using the 2nd disk as a genuine backup as its only going to contain Movies. My photos and music are backed up on a USB drive on my iMac using CarbonCopy as...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

I've seen solutions where there is a 1 bay drive with a usb plugged in that is the data backup drive. Although that works I'm kinda concinced that if I go down the NAS route it would have to be 2 bay with the second disk as the mirror (raid 1) as you suggest, Synology DS281+ is the current...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

Thats a good point BigT. I'll give that a go. The other motivation was clearing stuff off the iMac so that would do that as well. I suppose the only down side would be having to leave the iMac on and not asleep all the time... but then again I leave it on anyway most of the time so worth a try.

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

Thanks as that clears/confirms my thoughts. Sometimes "we" can over analyse things when perhaps the best option is right in front of us :) A NAS looks the best option with a single bay with USB backup being the simplest. Did think about the Nvidia Shield and usb storage but thats very biased...

NAS or Microserver, 1 bay or 2 and other Questions

I want to store, and stream, my movies to my TV via my Denon receiver and for the movies to be accessible on the home network. I'm a simple man and really dont have that much in the way of storage requirements. I expect to only use 2TB or at a push 4TB but 2 is plenty. At the moment my setup...

    Odd problem with Crucial M4

HDDs are nowhere being defunct of course but once SSDs are produced in TB sizes and, crucially, cost effectively it makes you wonder.............
