    Virgin Media Discussion Thread

As a by the by, I cancelled on the 26th. Retentions could offer me something close to the top package, with all the TV, sports, movies, landline and an unlimited SIM, but only 350 MB internet, for £99 a month. So basically, like being a new customer, but with slower internet. I said no. I got a...

Good to know. Did you have and keep or move a telephone number on your package? I don't use my landline a lot, but it would be helpful to not have to update it in 437 different places...

    Virgin Media Discussion Thread

My contract is up in less than a month and I had the letter to inform me I could leave anyway due to price rises. I'd rather avoid the hassle of leaving to rejoin, but I doubt I'd get a significantly better than new customer rate. If I cancel now, move to Now Broadband for a month or so and then...

Should a bicycle be on the roads

No, I'm not wrong or mistaken about anything. It might not be called "Road Tax", but being pedantic over the precise name of the tax, and it is a tax, doesn't change the fact that motorists pay it and cyclists don't. Bikes don't burn petrol, so don't pay fuel duty. Nor do they pay VAT on top of...

Should a bicycle be on the roads

I read the first post, but not the rest of the thread. I read recently (can't remember source) that road users contribute £46 billion a year to the treasury in road tax and fuel duty. Cyclists pay zero. On that basis alone, I think bicycles shouldn't be on the road because they get in...

Wow, call this a philosophical moment...

No matter how curious I am as to what it feels like to be the world record holder, Usain Bolt is always going to be faster than me. Physiology, not curiosity, defines my limits at least some of the time.

    Any opinions on o2 broadband?

No worries, I understand. Just missed your previous post else I wouldn't have bothered you.

    Any opinions on o2 broadband?

Marc, did you get a chance to talk to zombie? I emailed him a few days ago, but not heard anything. Just wondered if he was around at the moment.

    Cold Turkey

This is why you support more than one project at a time. I do 55 BOINC projects at last count, and that's not all of them. If Carling did stats addictions... it wouldn't be as good as mine.

    Decent media player

I'm a geek, I built my own media player. It's a bit buggy though, looks like crap and is called "-", but hey, I was proud of it. I may even get it to proper alpha stage yet :)

Old athlon xp 2400 machine, good for folding?

My farm is still predominantly Athlon XP based. Sure it's not as powerful as modern processors, but a lot of projects are still pure FPU bound in which case old Athlons do not too shabbily. I wouldn't fold with it, but I'd certainly BOINC with it.

Need a card, have requirements, apply within.

It's been four years since I last did a build from scratch, and whilst I've upgraded most stuff at some point, I'm at the stage where I really need to do a totally new build to catch up with all the latest tech. However, I saw a really pretty guitar last week and couldn't help myself from buying...

    Recommend me a 22" LCD TV/monitor.

A 32" TV doesn't make for a good computer monitor. Besides, the screens I'm looking at would do 720p with ease. The CNET review for the LG M228WD that s-p mentioned says it's 1900 x 1200, meaning it'll do 1080p as well. The Xbox 360 can output at 1080p if you set it to. I'm guessing what you...

    Recommend me a 22" LCD TV/monitor.

If you've any pics that'd be great thanks. Have you had any issues with things like backlight bleed? I'm not expecting anything amazing as I said, I realise it's a compromise and a budget screen, but I'm still interested in various different things about the monitor. I'd imagine the M228WD is...

    Recommend me a 22" LCD TV/monitor.

Whilst I'm still happy with my trusty 19" Samsung CRT, my 14" portable TV doesn't really cut it for playing my Xbox 360 these days. So I'm considering getting a new TV/monitor to get down to one slightly bigger screen. I realise that this will be a compromise - it won't be 1080P and it won't...

    Changing motherboards without reformatting windows...

Reformating when changing boards is not necessary. The only thing you have to be wary of is chipset drivers, and ppssibly controller drivers. Read this. You'll often find that moving between chipsets from the same company works ok, i.e. nF3 to nF4. But Intel to nF5 will kill the install...

    Socket 939: Dead or alive?.....

You want AMD to go bankrupt? Why, so Intel can shaft you and not bother to develop better technology? Competition is only a good thing. Without it we will see a return to the days of slow development and £500 processors. DDR2 was necessary for AMD because that's what the memory companies were...

    Socket 939: Dead or alive?.....

Um, this complaint is baseless and wrong. It applies to Intel however. Socket AM2 is compatible with all Socket AM2 chips. AMD will be updating Socket AM2 to what is currently being termed AM2+. The only difference is that HTT will move from the current 1.0 revision to 3.0 revision, giving a...
