INTEL OWNERS what cpu do you have and at what clock/vcore

E5300 at 3.52GHz, 1.360v. It cost £25. Still hoping Intel will make an overclockable K-series i3 or Pentium-G.

    Wait or get Sandybridge

Have you considered a Core i3 with a basic H61 motherboard? Even though they're only dual core, and you can't overclock, they have great gaming performance at stock speeds. It would be a good match for your gfx card too. This way, you get all the gaming performance you (realistically) need...

Sharing symbolic links over network in Windows 7

Actually, I think I fixed it. It seems the target folder that worked had inherited permissions which the others hadn't, so I applied read-only permissions for "Everyone" to the root of D:\ (found under the security tab in folder properties), and now it works for any link I create... ...BUT...

Sharing symbolic links over network in Windows 7

A baffling one, this one. I'm trying to create some symbolic links in a shared folder on my C drive, to folders on D:\, so I can access them on my NMT media player. I used a little program called DirLinker to create the links, but while this works fine locally, and my NMT can see the links...

Do you think we'll see a third player enter the high end gpu market any time soon?

Of course! I remember PowerVR were the main competitors to 3dfx (it was a two horse race even back then!). Didn't Quake II have 3 rendering options: 3dfx, PowerVR and OpenGL (for everything else)? Left-field suggestion: what about Sony? Could they build a card based on a Cell processor?

Do you think we'll see a third player enter the high end gpu market any time soon?

Would be nice to have some more competition in the market, especially given that ATI and nvidia don't seem to be competing as fiercely as they used to, not sure why. Nvidia seem fairly happy to concede the entry level and mid-range to ATI, as long as they can dominate the high/super-high end...

Budget card choice - ATI 5670 vs nvidia 9800GT

Thanks everyone, looks like near unanimous support for the 4850. Overlooked those entirely... :o

Budget card choice - ATI 5670 vs nvidia 9800GT

Hi all, A friend has asked me to recommend a decent budget card, preferably sub-£80. I initially thought the ati 5670 seemed good value at £70ish, but then I saw some 9800 GTs for a similar price, and I know they were highly regarded a while back. So which would be the better buy... or...

    Commuter Car - 25k

I would second the Volvo. The S60/V70/S80 all have nice pillowy soft suspension and excellent refinement, unlike rock-hard German cars, which I suspect are designed for perfect German roads, not the lunar surface we get here. Would say though that the S40 (and probably also V50) have a...

An AGP card to run GRID

Thanks, thats pretty much what I suspected:) Also I suppose that with AGP being a technological cul-de-sac, a new expensive graphics card, no matter how good it is, will be made redundant if and when he upgrades the rest of his system, as it will almost certainly be to a pci-express motherboard.

    Physical build advice please...

1 I presume you're talking about the extra CPU power connector/socket. I've never come across one of these before, but If the 8 pin plug fits in the 8 pin socket on the board, then it will probably work. Although I honestly don't know what advantages the 4 extra pins give, so you could just...

An AGP card to run GRID

My Dad would like a new graphics card for Xmas, to replace my old nvidia 6800gs. Really the only current game he wants to play is GRID, although he is stuck with AGP. From OcUK, that means a choice between the £70 ATI 3650 and the £120 ATI 3850. That's a fair price gap, and I know the 3850...

    TV just blew up

I think second-hand will be your best bet for a decent CRT TV at the minute. Be sure to go for widescreen if you can.

Chances of this Sony CRT doing NTSC and PAL-60?

I'd say the chances are very good. My 28" Sony Widescreen is a lot older than this one (it's black!), and it displays both NTSC and PAL-60 fine from my Panasonic DVD player.

    Freeview On PC

I wasn't actually aware of the £20 option for just the viewing card, and I was wondering how it would work if you already had all the equipment, thanks :) However, if you take the £20 fee, and factor in that you may have to buy a 2nd hand Skybox, you're getting dangerously close to the price...

    Freeview On PC

In an attempt to clarify: - Freeview is a system for receiving completely free-to-air, unencrypted channels through an aerial (excluding TopUpTV). - Freesat from Sky can be obtained for a one off payment (£150 I believe) or by cancelling a Sky subscription and continuing to use the Sky...

1k for a TV, what options have I got?

Agreed... although if you went for an LCD rather than DLP projector there are several that have an HD-ready 1280x720 resolution for around a grand. Panasonic's PT-AE900 is one, I think Hitachi, Sanyo and Epson also do some good ones. Then you can start thinking about your screen size in...

    Standby buttons? HAH! Ban folding.

If people can't leave their TV on standby then they'll most likely leave them switched on. How will that help?
