Getting into the IT industry - why so difficult?

There are two real stumbling blocks for getting on the IT ladder at the moment; Experience is key There has been a very slow swing over the last few years to favour those with experience to those with freshly minted qualifications but little practical experience. If you have experience and...

    What book are you reading...

I've just finished The Long Earth, but am undecided about Long War the reviews seem mixed at best. Your thoughts on Long War? Currently reading Rule 34 by Charles Stross.

NETGEAR's R7000 "Nighthawk" Most powerful Router

Mainly because they are aimed squarely at the US and Asian markets that have high speed connections more readily available than here, most of those present on RJ45 rather than ADSL. Still shame it's not available over here yet, would make a cracking AP.

    Moving 75gb files around :(

The first question as always is are you currently saturating the GB link you have? If not you will need to look at faster disk subsystems at both ends. Other than that 10GB ethernet is the way to go, fibre links should be less trouble, but by the time you have spf's/cards for everything and a...

Cisco NAT problem (on a pix)

Fun isn't it? Lost half a day this week debugging the checkpoint end of a VPN tunnel, and the other guy had his subnet wrong (at the other end) and then didn't change it when it was pointed out. Still all good practise, I've spend much more time on Cisco ASA's than on Checkpoint kit over...

Cisco NAT problem (on a pix)

If your not using the same IP address as the WAN interface it shouldn't be the PDM interface getting in the way. Have you tried setting up a packet capture, to see if the packets are passing the PIX but not getting a response from the server? Been a while since I've had to debug a problem on a...

Cisco NAT problem (on a pix)

It looks fine, but posting a sanitized version of the config will make it easier to spot any gotchas. A few questions; Pix or ASA and software version? Is the external address used the same as the WAN interface address? PDM/ASDM enabled on the device?

    Have you successfully quit smoking?

I do wonder this from time to time. I grew up in a house with a smoker (my father smoked, however my mother didn't) smoked myself for well over 10 years, and have probably been quit for 15 years now. And yet from time to time I still crave a cigarette or a cigar not given in to it yet, but the...

    Nexus 5 leaked

Yes I remember a guy at work getting a galaxy note and saying how big it was, I picked the phone up and his comment of "that looks small when you hold it" which made me laugh. I'd be quite happy for the N5 to sport a 5" screen, the whole size question for me is more about how easily will it...

    Which Domain Registrar

I have 5 domains with 123-reg, I use them for domain purchase and for providing the DNS servers for the domains only. I'm happy managing the various A/MX/CNAME records via the 123-reg control panel myself. The main thing for me is that I have only had one issue worthy of note which involved...

*** The Official Google Nexus 7 Thread ***

Well mine greeted me with the OTA ready to go and failed the update :( Stock and non-rooted. I guess we'll see what happens next time round or I may just do a factory reset and install the stock 4.3 from scratch. Anyone else had an issue with OTA 4.3?

Microsoft has announced the retirement of the TechNet Subscriptions service

To raise the barrier for people who want to be MS certified? And the irony after years of trying finally got work to pay for a technet sub (so I'm not paying out of my own pocket, to use for testing solutions for customers at work) and it gets pulled :(

    Range Rover Evoque

More and more of these (the evoque) starting to turn up in the car park at work, just a couple of things; 1) They are really quite nice inside. Much nicer than the qashqai. 2) There is not as much room in the back as you would think. Usual advice applies, get yourself comfy in the front, then...

    Gold/silver coins

Not a great way to store money (short term) either as at best you will get for purchases is bullion cost +5-20% for gold coins (the larger the coin weight wise the closer you get to bullion market rates) also there is no vat on gold coins. On silver coins you are looking at bullion cost +5-10%...

Kinda, back to been more of a long term investment at the moment. Places to buy from; The Royal Mint prices are not very competitive, but you will get the items you pay for. http://www.weightoncoin.co.uk/ actually based not far from me, so I order on-line and pick up in person...
