Please spec me a quiet, future-proof desktop PC

Wow - thanks all! A lot of food for thought here. ATX vs mini ITX, passive or semi-passive PSU, 16 vs 32 GB, Coffee Lake vs Ryzen Threadripper... On the last point, it looks like the performance of the i7 8700 and Ryzen 1900X is similar, with the Ryzen edging it with heavy multi-threaded...

Please spec me a quiet, future-proof desktop PC

Hi, it's been years since I last built a system from scratch, so I'm looking for some advice from you fine people. My wife's PC is getting long in the tooth, so I'm going to put something new together (or buy pre-built, if I can get what she needs that way). Budget is £2000, but rather do it for...

    "error loading OS"

Greetings! I've been having some problems with my hard drives lately, with Windows installations gradually corrupting until I'm forced to format and re-install. I think one of my drives might be faulty. However... my most recent installation went without a hitch after I replaced a SATA...

What do you think this mobile number is worth?

Except that it is, in fact, 11 numbers.

Your opinions on the Nokia E70?

Good to know, and makes me more keen on the N80 tbh. Just shows you have to choose your sources wisely (was some German review site I think, that said the N80 had a ~200MHz processor). OcUK all the way

Your opinions on the Nokia E70?

Anyone know an approximate release date for this phone? I'm about to spring for an N80 but might wait for this. I've scoured Google, but to no avail. Why does there seem to be so little excitement about the E70? Seems perfect to me, barring the dodgy looks. Faster processor than the N80...

Fast, responsive phone with decent camera?

Greetings all! I've reached the end of my contract, so it's upgrade time. I'm currently on 3 (with no problems so far), paying £30/month for 500mins+100texts, with an LG U8110 (yuck). I'm looking for something I can get free or for less than £50, either through an upgrade with 3, or...

    Is my Motherboard/CPU dead?

Make sure all four of the power connectors are connected (24-pin and 4-pin ATX, 4-pin molex, FDD connector next to the graphics card). Reset CMOS. Put just one stick of RAM in the orange slot furthest from the CPU (slot 2). Turn on, and see if you can get into the BIOS now. If not, try...

    DFI NF4: four power connections?

LOL, I'm flattered. Go camp it up ;)

    DFI NF4: four power connections?

Performance is about more than speed, darling. It's not the size of your overclock that matters, it's what you do with it. ;) OcUK is like the gay XS. Overclocking with style.

Computer Crashing (DFI Lanparty UT Sli-D)

Hate to bring it up again, when you seem so dead against the idea, but... 9 times out of 10, if you're getting random crashes on a DFI, and your RAM is running error free, then it's the PSU. What's the make and model of your 450W? Is it 24-pin? Do you have all the auxiliary cables (4-pin...

    Power issue with new board.

Higher rated PSUs generally draw less power from the mains, when powering the same components (i.e. they are more efficient), than lower rated ones. It's efficiency and load that determine your electricity bill, not the maximum power the PSU can deliver. Which is nice :D Sorry to hear of...

I assume you don't have another keyboard to test it with? Interesting problem! Let us know if you find the answer :)

asus a8ne board - hanging on xp boot screen !!!

My money would be on the IDE drivers, as you suggest. Happened to me once when I forgot not to install them  ended up reinstalling windows, as I couldn't even get into safe mode. Haven't installed an nVidia IDE driver since, and haven't had a hitch :)

    windows versus bios voltage

Sorry - I wasn't paying enough attention when I read the first post. I see what you're saying now - CPU-z gives different readings from uguru, but both are in Windows, so where are the readings coming from? I'm afraid I don't know :o I've noticed this sort of difference before with Windows...

    windows versus bios voltage

Neither. The only way to get an accurate voltage reading is to use a multimeter, as onboard monitoring is notoriously unreliable. However, I suspect the readings in the BIOS and in CPU-z are the same - just it's different in Windows as the load is different. I'd recommend only using the...

Eek! I think my DFI Expert is dead!

Sorry to hear about your mate's board. I'm exactly the same way when I recommend something to my less computer literate friends and family - sometimes it doesn't work out and I feel terrible :( And very frustrating that they returned the board as fine. What, are we supposed to just put up...

    which one

It really depends what you want from the board. You'll get the fastest overclocks of your life on the dfi expert, but at the expense of a lot of investment of time. To paraphrase the recent Custom PC review of the mobo: it's by far the best board available, but only for those who list...
