Well I guess it will be 70% gaming, 30% encoding.

No for gaming, it takes a hit on encoding and vice versa for the 1700X

Will take a look at the 1700X as the £120 premium for the 1800X is a bit tough to swallow. I did revisit the 7700K and with a reasonable motherboard is equivalent to the 1700X setup.

I was looking at the 7700K but the 1800X is better for encoding and streaming to YouTube etc. I see it as a more future proof CPU than the 7700K and the 1800X isn't that far off to be honest.

So having come into some money I am going to upgrade my rig, so far I have the following. £1,300 around the top end of my budget and replaces the rig in my sig. Will be gaming on a 1080p 144Hz monitor. Thoughts on the spec? My basket at Overclockers UK: 1 x Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB...

Decisions, decisions, go for a 1700X along with the motherboard and memory with no gaming benchmarks to speak of...:(

I would say wait 3-4 weeks and see what AMD brings to the table with Ryzen. But here is a comparison of the two processors.

If AMD release 4C/8T, 8c/8T and 8C/16T I don't see where the 6C/12T would sit from a price and performance perspective, depends on the IPC I guess. Too many SKUs with performance not too far apart. Also with AMDs finances wouldn't you want settle on a single design i.e. Summit Ridge rather...

This is the issue with you lot you make me want to buy it :) I have a GTX970, the RX480 is something of a side-grade but the DX12 support is pretty damn good. With a 144hz display my only reservation is whether it can push the FPS that high on ultra settings compared to my GTX970.

I went for the Lian-Li PC-A75X it can take 12x 3.5" and I fitted a 3x3.5" caddy in the optical bays. Gives me 12x3TB plus 3x4TB for parity drives... Great case especially if you invest in the back planes as well.
