Mobo with a LOT of Sata's

The speed of the interface outstrips the speed of transfers to and from it so it doesn't make a great deal of difference. When you have a couple of zippy hard disks copying data back and forth mostly from their caches, that's when the added pace of SATA comes in. The classic IDE set up is...

O/Cing MB with 2 IDE ports?

IDE to sata adaptors are pretty cheap and work pretty poorly in my experience. Firstly, they didn't fit (had to be filed down). Secondly, they didn't work with my Maxtor 20GB drive. And thirdly, they didn't fit my case (drives fitted transversely) Though they did come with nice...

Mobo with a LOT of Sata's

The amount of time it takes to send the data down the cable is insignificant next to the amount of time it takes to get the data off of the disc. I'm sitting here installing 5 discs of WoWarcraft, and each one takes about 8 seconds to spin up on my SATA DVD/RW (sigged). The speed of optical...

    Random PC Total Lockups

After it happens look in Eventvwr , System and post up the error message that coincides with the time of the reboot.

    3 HDD + CD-rom

Sounds like an odd problem. CD/DVD drives work fine with hard disks (and have done since double speed cd readers), and like hard disks, you need to set the jumpers on them. If you're building a new machine, the easiest way is to set everything to Cable Select and chuck it in and install the OS...

AMD Opteron price reductions effective today!

I know I'd definitely buy a 185 if they came into stock. I'd also get a new cooler as well. As a kind of final upgrade for my out of favour socket.

is this normal for a stock system?

Run a 3dmark06 and you can compare against similar systems. Granted, these'll be tweaked machines, but should give you a rough estimate to what you should be aiming for.

Smallest size case a standard motherboard will fit in?

Keeping the cables tidy in a Super Lanboy can be a bit fiddly (to say the least), but it is lightweight. It comes with carry handles, but they're not worth the effort.

    DEll Laptops

fastwunz: Bootvis can make a massive improvement to boot times, especially of laptops (did to my ancient P2). Need to Google for it. It is a Microsoft product, but no longer supported. XP 32bit only though. It re-orders the start up of services.

    Threaded Optimisation

Just out of interest, what game is it? (Guessing System Shock 2)

3Dmark06 Off: 3727 On: 3737 I don't think that can be claimed as any sort of victory...

    Threaded Optimisation

Where is it? I'll take a look. I've got Coolbits2 on, so all the hidden pages are there. Edit: Lol! Yeah, I got it. Set to Auto. Time for some experiments.

    Soldering a 6800GT

Power connector perhaps - if it is, that's pretty easy to fix if you know how to solder. They're pretty chunky though - how did that happen?

    Threaded Optimisation

I think it's a setting that's not in the user's hands eg. Nvidia decided it always improves things so didn't have an option to turn it off. There may be Registry settings to turn it off. No idea how you could test it though. Perhaps run 3DMark, but set the affinity so that it doesn't run on...

    windows mirroring?!

I once moved a hard disk from a K6 into a 486DX4 with Windows98SE on it. It took about 6 reboots ("Windows has found new hardware..."), no intervention from me other than clicking OK, and it worked a charm. Once you're done add an environment variable (Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced...

    who is running win 64

I remembered last night that the force feedback on my Saitek Cyborg FF doesn't work. When I first installed it, the spring didn't even work, so it flopped about uselessly. It has improved, but still no FF (the test in Game Controllers CP causes errors).

    who is running win 64

A wise man once told me to never install a Microsoft OS before Service Pack One. As there's currently no point to getting hold of a copy of Vista (no DX10 games out) I shan't be. But if your machine came with Vista pre-installed, or you need to get an OS anyway, you may as well use Vista, as...

    who is running win 64

I don't recall coming across a game that doesn't install on XP x64 (though Final Reality, and the two oldest 3DMarks won't). I suspect System Shock 2 won't install (as it didn't on Windows 2000 moaning about NT not having DirectX 4 support). AVG Free won't run on it, but that's stated on the...

    Laptop car chargers.

Surely that's a bit arse-about-face. Look on the laptop's power supply sticker. It'll say how much voltage and ampage it kicks out. Get a car cigarette lighter adapter with a variable output on it. (The one I have puts out almost anything from 3V to 12V.) Get a connector the same shape...

Single most expensive component you've bought?

£270 for a second hand Sony Trinitron 21" monitor (still in use and probably my greatest single purchase considering how long it's lasted). £230 for a (recently retired) Ricoh DVD reader/CD-RW. It seemed to be only a fortnight later that prices plummeted to £30 for DVD-RW, and I wasn't happy...
