Buying components for a new build - Linux

Thanks to you both. System is probably going to be AMD mobo, cpu, and gfx card. AMD open source their drivers so I'd rather build an AMD system, and I don't want nvidia graphics unless I have to. I've never had a problem with nvidia graphics cards, but AMD seem much more linux friendly.

Buying components for a new build - Linux

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought, but I wanted to hear other people's experiences. I've only been on linux for 2 years so you have over 8 years on me, so it's good to hear what's happened with you in these situations. I've never used an LTS distro (unless Mint is LTS - not sure). The...

    Which distro based on requirements

MInt - excellent. Steam works great on it. Manjaro - any desktop version (you can have it with anything - cinnamon, gnome, kde, etc). Excellent. Steam works great on it. Popos. Meant to be excellent for gaming. I've installed it but never kept it for long. As another poster has mentioned...

Buying components for a new build - Linux

I'm thinking of building a new computer. It would be all separate parts picked from OCUK. No dual boot. The computer will run Linux only. If you are buying new parts from OCUK it's pretty difficult to find reliable compatibility information online, as the parts are mostly too new to be listed...

What Linux Operating Systems do you like?

Mint and Manjaro (normally Manjaro KDE).

    Converting to Linux

I converted fully about 2 years ago. Wiped windows from the desktop and laptop and switched. It was a bit of work. I run a business and we have lots of mail merge documents we use, and these all had to be converted completely. Rebuilt as libreoffice writer documents instead of ms word. Never...

How reliable are these liquid watercooling things?

Ok, and zero votes for Asetek. I think I'll have a look at the Corsairs on offer. Thanks :)

Thanks. Are Asetek a good manufacturer?

How reliable are these liquid watercooling things?

It's a long time since I've built a computer. This curent machine has been running solid for about 10 years so maybe time for an upgrade. I see that chunky air coolers for the CPU are being replaced by something that won't fill the case nearly as much, but how reliable are the liquid...

    UK Map of Cellphone Towers

My god you people are so brainwashed. They got you good when you were young eh. If you people rubbishing the question asked by the OP had a brain you might be dangerous. Lets all trust big business not to do something for profit that harms human health. Flame away...

GTA5 capable desktop - how much do I need to spend

I need to replace a laptop (fried mobo) with a desktop. The laptop was an Alienware 17 with a 980M and ran GTA5 on max settings. What would I need to spend on a desktop to get similar performance. Would £1000 do it?? What level of gfx card, cpu do I need. Is there a website where I can...

Monitor exchange potentially difficult - anybody done one of these?

I've bought a wide screen monitor from overclockers, unpacked it, peeled of the plastic covers (the clear film), tried it for about an hour, and realised I should have gone for a large 4k instead. Can I return it in view of the fact that the plastic film has been peeled off, and how do I...

Can my graphics card run a wide screen high def' monitor?

Searched the forum, and I've googled, but I still don't know so I'm posting. I have this graphics card: Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card I'm thinking of a widescreen monitor. Maybe not this one, but something like it in terms of...

What kind of SSD to buy?

256 for windows disc- or maybe a 500 in case I get back into gaming. Doesn't matter much. Data disc will be 1TB.

What kind of SSD to buy?

Running a machine built by OCUK and pretty heavily customised since, but the original windows / boot SSD is still in it and I think it's getting old (seems to be getting slow). I'm going to replace the windows ssd and also replace my data hdd (traditional 7200rpm) with a new ssd. My...

    GTA5 on Radeon R5 M335 4GB??

Anyway to un-cripple the thing. I gather you are saying there is an imposed bottleneck?

    GTA5 on Radeon R5 M335 4GB??

I thought with 4gb of graphics memory it would be a half decent card. Assessing pc specs is annoyingly complicated.
