    WHS2011 licence

Thanks. Existing copy is OEM. I'll get the new copy from the same place.

    WHS2011 licence

I've got 2 HP N40L servers (one for media, the other for CCTV). The media server is running WHS2011, the CCTV server is currently running XP Home (I had a spare licence, so I thought I'd try it to save a few quid). Using XP is proving to be a bit of a pain. The server runs headless, so it's...

WHS firewall problem. I've set it to allow the app, and it's working now.

problems accessing server web page on intranet

I've got a WHS2011 server running as a media server. I'm also going to use it to run a couple of ip CCTV cameras. The CCTV software (BlueIris) sets up a web page so that the cameras and recordings can be viewed remotely. Originally I had a conflict with WHS2011's own web server, so I am...

Using DVI-HDMI for PC connection - Panasonic TH-46PZ81B

Thinking about getting a Panasonic TH-46PZ81B - the Freesat one. I'll be connecting a Mac Mini to it for general browsing, photo viewing and HD video. The PC input on this TV only goes up to 1280 x 1024 or 1366 x 768. Doesn't do the full 1:1 pixel thing at 1920 x 1080. Does DVI-HDMI work...

NAS for Media Player, OS X and XP

I've got a media player (Pixel Magic MB200) which supports samba. It'll play music or video directly from my iMac or my XP PC. It's capable of seeing anything that's put into a shared directory. On the Mac, I've enabled Windows sharing, so presumably it's enabled samba support? I've also got...

    Mac users' elitism

IIRC, Evesham built a PC very similar in design to a Mini - cost about £600, and had a tendancy to overheat. Don't suppose they sold many.

    Mac users' elitism

Why do so many people think that Macs cost more than PCs? Sure, it's possible to buy a super-cheap PC, built using out of date components. If, however, you compare like for like, some Macs are actually cheaper than comparably specced Windows PCs. Try building a PC to match a Mac Mini. The...

How come you've not transferred to Fujitsu? I take it you're not a field engineer? I used to work for SBS, but our whole operation got transferred to F-S in April.

Cash Machine | Hole in the wall question.

Depends how busy the machine is, and when it was last filled. Average where I live is around £120K when just filled (remote sites filled by security company). Branch machines often carry less during quiet periods. 2 strong men with a sack barrow can move a full-size through-the-wall ATM.

    New Job - IT Technician

What part of Siemens do you work for? I've been with Siemens ITS (now Fujitsu-Siemens) for 9 years. Started as an installations engineer, installing and upgrading ATMs. Then worked as a field engineer on contract. Finally taken on permanent nearly 6 years ago. Before Siemens, I did 20...

Spec me a Tuner Seperate for my Hi Fi

Whatever you get (FM, DAB or Freeview), you'll need a decent aerial. While a portable radio normally works OK using the telescopic antenna, most separates tuners need a roof aerial to give their best, unless you live very close to the transmitter.

Spec me a Tuner Seperate for my Hi Fi

What about using a Freeview box? I get poor FM reception (despite a new FM roof aerial), but very good Freeview reception. Freeview radio sounds better than FM through my Denon or Arcam receivers. AFAIK, the bitrate on Freeview radio is higher than on DAB for some stations, although the number...

    Chamonix, France

Went to Chamonix once about 10 years ago, during the summer. Nice place, but outrageously expensive. 50FF (£5) for a cup of coffee. I dread to think what the prices are like now!

    K100D Macro.

What make are those magnifying filters? I'm thinking about getting some for my K100D. I assume that you used a tripod. I took some closeups with the 18-55 at the weekend, at 8 seconds f32 ISO100, using the 2 second self-timer. Came out sharp, but not as close as I would like.

    More CD madness

I feel that the entry-model squeezebox, while probably better than a straight PC-based player, will still fall down due to the quality of it's clock. The Transporter is a different matter. Have a listen to a PixelMagic HD-MB200 (TCXO model) through a decent DAC. Not sure if it'll match a true...

    More CD madness

Ah, but the PC isn't actually doing any of the music replay - it's just supplying the raw data, the Transporter is re-clocking it, same as a dedicated media player would. The PC is only really acting as a glorified NAS. In most PC-based setups, using a soundcard or USB device, the PC clock is...
