Hey all,
Been a while since I looked at the latest home streaming gadgets along with the traditional HTPC and other tech.
I'm currently running a couple of HP microservers as a home NAS and Plex Media Server which I set up 2-3 years ago. It's been running stable since, so it's very much...
Amazing reply, thanks so much!
It's an Acer (Aspire E1) laptop, nice piece of kit for the money, shame about the crapware. I've been uninstalling junk software for over an hour and I'm very bored of it now, I'd rather do a fresh install and not use the recovery partition.
Thanks for the...
Hey all,
My parents have just bought themselves a new laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled.
I have a spare 128GB SSD drive that I would like to donate to them to replace their 500GB 5400RPM drive (as they would appreciate the speed over space).
What options do I have in regards to...
Thanks a lot for the reply. That's really helpful, not that I know much about ohms and thd, this has encouraged me to do some reading about it and I think I understand a bit more now.
Do you think a good approach for now would be to go for an integrated amp and just forget about a DAC for...
Hi all,
Just after some advice regarding amps/dacs. I'm very close to buying a pair of Monitor Audio Bronze BX2, after reading many reviews they look to be excellent. I will try and get a demo of them in a local store if possible.
I intend to use these speakers for music only, on a wooden desk...
Just an update on this.
I've found these mentioned in various other threads:
http://www.superfi.co.uk/p-3250-wharfedale-diamond-91-speakers-sw150-subwoofer-21-speaker-package.aspx
Which look amazing, but I'm struggling to find an amp for them, any recommendations?
Again, something...
Hey all,
I currently own a set of Logitech z5500's which I still love and have been going strong for over 6 years. However, I no longer play PC games much anymore and only ever listen to music. I've always felt that music on 5.1 never sounds as good for some reason, so the z5500's are now...
Hey all,
Looking for a bit of general advice or recommendations if possible.
I'm reaching out to any current designers or companies out there to get an idea of what prototyping tools/techniques you use on a daily basis and why. There are a lot of resources and tools out there but the list is...
Cheers for the reply, was hoping someone would say something like that :)
As it happens, yes. That was the first place I noticed that, however I've seen many other blog posts, forums posts that have also mentioned it in an attempt to discourage using raid5 *shrug*.
Cheers.
Hey all,
Got myself into a bit of a pickle, currently working to build myself a home NAS solution.
Setup:
- HP Proliant Microserver N40L
- 8GB RAM
- 4x 2TB WD20EAR
I've tried both FreeNAS (Raidz1) and Openfiler (Software RAID 5) and I really like them both for different reasons and I can't...
Thanks for your reply and suggestion. Just took a look at Crashplan, it looks good. I don't know anything about it so I'll do a bit of some research.
I've already experimented with FreeNAS very briefly running on my ESXi host, but I'm still pretty new with it so still in the learning phase...
Hey all,
So a little while ago my ancient computer I used to store files on gave up the ghost. After some research I went and bought the cashback offer HP Microserver N40L, a 2TB hard drive and WHS 2011 to replace it.
I thought that was the end of that, but no. After reading some of the...
Apologies for pulling up a slightly older thread, but I was wondering how you got on with your Microserver with ESXi and FreeNAS?
I'm contemplating a similar setup on my HP N40L, I have ESXi installed with WHS2011 & Linux but I'm curious to learn about FreeNAS and if it will be of any benefit...
Thanks a lot for the reply and posting your set up, very useful.
When you says "1 large datastore -1 large VHD" what does this mean? I know what a datastore is but what is a VHD in this context and how do you use it? Are you just saying that it's one large unpartitioned datastore?
I've read...
Hey all,
My Microserver has arrived and I'm really impressed with it.
Upgraded the memory to 8GB (Used this and working great https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-023-OK)
Added 1x 2TB WD Green HD in addition to the 250GB that comes with the N40L
I've been toying...
What are people using for security on their WHS 2011 set ups? I'm just using my microserver + WHS for backups, file storage and VMs, no other services or ports will be open/forwarded to this machine, all client computers have their own AV/Firewalls, will I be ok to just use the windows firewall...
Argh purple shirt place, never ever ever ever ever buy anything from these bloody useless, clueless, ripping cowboys.
Some advice:
1. NEVER: take your high-street bought computer or laptop back to the shop to be repaired if it breaks.
2. ALWAYS: take your computer or laptop to your resident...
