WARNING: Don't access teamocuk [dot] com

Not sure why anyone would want to, but mistakes happen. Please do *not* attempt to access the old teamocuk.com domain as it appears to be hosting malware. I've never had ownership of that domain so this is out of my control. I do retain access to teamocuk.co.uk, so that one's fine, if empty. I...

    You'd be able to buy two! 8Pack Domin8! :)

This Instant And Moment - 2023!

Almost nothing. I scrapped a UPS that was from that era last year, so some of it lasted a lot better than others.

    Cyclists on Canal footpaths :|

Having been mowed down by someone on a bike who wasn't paying attention, I'd much rather they have bells *and use them*. I've been known to walk out in front of bikes I haven't heard/seen (they took evasive action), so I do appreciate that it works both ways.

PDW, nice job on helping Team UKraine!

Hi! PDW was/is a fairly big hitter. There's been plenty others, but most have shut down for obvious reasons. The biggest ones date back to the classic SETI days - those were crazy! Haven't been doing anything in the area myself for a long time. Last one to go was the stats site.

This Instant And Moment - 2023!

Just found a huge pile of OcUK shop receipts. 2002-2012 vintage. Total spend: roughly £10k! (a lot more than I thought) Used the shop a few times since then, but nothing like that much. Same goes for the forum. Life changes I guess. Now, the shredder beckons!

Is it too much? UK EuroMillions ticket-holder wins £111.7m

Much less. Premium Bonds are one of the oldest examples of this. £1m headline-grabbing jackpot lures people in, but unless you put in £5k+ the chances are that you'll get nowt, and for less than £20k you should do better with a savings account or ISA. That said, I'd accept £1m or £111m!

Full frame/low light camera recommendations please

Anyone got any experience with Canon R series please? The R6 seems to be ticking all the boxes, but its way over my original budget. I'm not sure how the older models compare.

Full frame/low light camera recommendations please

I'm currently considering upgrading my 'big' camera (from 7D Mk II). I'm not a big DSLR user these days (not a fan of the weight, and a firm believer in the best camera being the one you carry with you), but there are circumstances where a big sensor is the only way. I'm particularly interested...

At what point will you be forced to move to IPv6 because of IPv4 address depletion?

If not a torrent, then there are peer-to-peer backup solutions that have taken similar approaches (not sure I'm allowed to name them, so I won't). Most of them fail because people put in far more of their own data than they're willing to store for others (my own data hoard is pretty big, so i...

Winter 2021/22 - Will we see lots of snow?

West Berkshire: At least a dozen trees down that I know of. Many power cuts (not me yet, but all around). Work colleague has lost roof tiles.

    Long term storage

Out of 10 3TB WD drives I have that are roughly 6-7 years old, I've seen two show a few read errors each. I think the general consensus is to replace HDDs about every 5 years, so I've not done bad. SSDs, particularly modern TLC/QLC ones, are not great for cold storage. I've got a Samsung 840...

    new hardware for truenas

I was thinking exactly the same as BongoHunter but decided not to say it at the time as it looks like this may be an upgrade. Adding drives to an existing ZFS pool currently involves adding a whole new vdev (last I heard a solution for that was being worked on, but filesystem development is...

Slow USB data transfer to external NVMe SSD

Google search turned up some similar issues but none match your situation, so I'll leave it there.

Retiring my ESXi Whitebox + Home Server + ZFS

Someone's been very lucky with that faulted vdev! Surprised it didn't melt up there (it would if I put one in my loft). But yes, keeping things simple when it comes to family members is absolutely the right approach unless you want to be on-call IT support. In fact, keeping things simple in...

Slow USB data transfer to external NVMe SSD

The 'super fast' start would be Windows disk caching. The rest suggests a hardware or possibly driver problem. Tried different cables? (you said drives, but not cables) Does the same problem happen with reads?

NVMe drive adapter for PCIe Gen 3?

Thanks. Having been caught out once, I'd need to be sure those are all NVMe, and not SATA. I have plenty of PCIe slots, so I have no issue with using these if they do what's needed (they work out cheaper than the SuperMicro alternative).

NVMe drive adapter for PCIe Gen 3?

Its a server board, so no RGB headers. As such, that SuperMicro option may indeed be the most appropriate choice. If not, I'll just tape over the LEDs if they're objectionable (don't want to void the warranty by using violence). More than likely won't be visible anyway. I'll have a hunt...

NVMe drive adapter for PCIe Gen 3?

I can do bifurcation - just not the combination that the ASUS board needs. I saw the Silverstone one, but declined because I already have an M2 SATA board (as I discovered when the NVMe drives didn't work). I didn't realise that was what the cable out the top of the Akasa one did. If I don't...

NVMe drive adapter for PCIe Gen 3?

Looking for an adapter that'll let me connect two M.2 NVMe drives to an empty PCIe Gen 3 slot on my motherboard (which has no onboard M.2 NVMe). Any suggestions please? I've seen the ASUS one that takes 4 NVMe drives, but while I do have empty x16 slots, my motherboard doesn't support 4 x4...
