best thing to do is just attach the phone without any filters to the test socket. If you still have a hiss or a cracklng sound report it again. Bt will most likely say there is no fault but persist ther is and an engineer will come out to check your socket and wiring.
try attaching a corded phone to the test socket which is located behind the face plate of the master socket and dial 17070 option 2 and listen for crackels or noises which could indicate a fault with the line. Or try this http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html
migrate free to TitanADSL and get your first month with a £5 off offer also they are an Enta reseller.
My speeds are fab all the time well worth the change from aol hell.

Plug a standard corded phone to the master socket with nothing else attached and dial 17070 then option 2 and check for any noises or crackels. Bt will most likely say there is no fault but insist on this once you have done the quiet line test which will hopefully come up with noises.
Let us...
well i have it my older brother has it and i think 2-3 members on here have Titan. They are fairly new but have a small cmr base which gives you a more personal feel to the service, not saying adsl24 wont give you a good service, but again i prefer TitanADSL, friendly people.
or you could go with TitanADSL which use the same network as adsl24 but they are offering £5 off your first month! and again they are on a 1 month contract basis. www.titan-adsl.co.uk http://www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_details.php?isp=106
i would agree on the migration part. also look at enta resellers such as adsl24, titanadsl, aquiss, falconet all of the mentioned resellers offer superb support and 1 month contract period.
first make sure that aren't any equipment around you bt socket that could be causing interference.
Also you may want to do this http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php?type=html
you should tell your mate to move over to an Enta reseller such as TitanADSL, ADSL24, Aquiss ect ect.
Then tell him to come back and tell you the transformation of his broadband.
