**********The All New Official OcUK Anti-Virus Program Thread - KEEP ALL AV QUESTIONS IN HERE*******

Norton sent an email asking for £65 to renew a shortly-to-expire 3 user licence for Norton 360. When I told the online agent that a new copy of this is only £35 (even from crappy Currys) he said that £65 was the normal price and the best he could do. So I told him I would use McAfee - at which...

    Windows 7 shut down

I have just had a conversation with somebody who said that if Windows 7 is shut down 3 times by cutting power, it will automatically reboot into safe mode and can only be restarted with a keyboard. There are ways to get around it but it requires some OS programming to bypass. Ever heard of...

Is it time for a laptop upgrade?

Thanks for your reply. It's my computer, used for some work and some personal use. I would rather not spend more than is worthwhile. It would be good to speed the reponse to web access, spreadsheets. Some Photoshop. Generally only one or two programs running at once, difficult to say...

Is it time for a laptop upgrade?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A200 with Intel core 2 Duo T7100 @ 1.8Ghz and 2GB RAM with Windows XP/3. Used mainly for business type applications - Word, Excel, Internet. No gaming at all. Please can anyone suggest whether it is worth upgrading to 4GB memory and/or Windows 7 to speed it up...

    MB, CPU and memory upgrade

I may need to do some high res image work, possibly video. Am I right in assuming that a separate video card is not necessary for my type of applications, and is only really needed for gaming? I would rather take the budget up than drop the perfromance.

    MB, CPU and memory upgrade

Need to upgrade again with new MB, CPU and RAM. Perferably Intel based. Please help with recommendations. Application is solely business and internet. No gaming at all. Photoshop, web access, and other general purpose apps. I don't think I need a dedicated graphics card; probably...

O2 called me on my mobile to offer broadband : Scam??

I'm 99% certain it's a scam. Have had these calls from "O2" in Manchester. They seem to know details but didn't seem real. I asked O2 and they said they wouldn't offer this when I still have 3 months to go, and suspect a scam themselves. Needless to say the 0161 numbers aren't answered -...

    Wireless to wired conversion

I need to connect a single PC through its RJ45 wire connection to a wireless network. There are various 'Wireless Range Extenders' that pick up wireless signals for retransmission and have RJ45 sockets, but it is not always easy to tell from the manual whether these can be used as outputs...

Upgrade to 4 year old system

Thanks for your advice. Are there any recommended MBs and CPUs? This PC isn't even used for audio so doesn't need any bells or whistles, just basic stuff. I was also thinking about dropping a silent PSU in, is this one really silent? OCZ StealthXStream 400w Silent Power Supply.

Upgrade to 4 year old system

The hard drive is OK and I use an external back up drive as well. Would a graphic card help. At the moment it uses the onboard one? Would it be worht replcaing ditching the lot?

Upgrade to 4 year old system

I am still using a system based on these components: Epox EP-5EGA+Intel 915 VGA (MB-041-EP) Intel P4, 540J Prescott 3.2GHz (800FSB) (CP-058-IN) OCUK Value 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel kit (MY-004-OK) It's running OK but probably could be faster. So without...

    Interesting Crash

Electrical noise and spikes from the motor will create fields and upset signals on the MB - particlularly sensitive crystals that oscillate to generate clocks. If your case is earthed - sounds like it isn't - the noise will find it harder to get through and cause less effect, but won't rule it...

Noisy PC - What part to blame?

If it's a low frequency hum, rather than a higer frequency whine, it might be a loose piece on the case, or it's up against a wall. The whole case will vibrate a little and anything loose will rattle - like a car.

    Canon iP4200 Blocked Nozzle?

I have an old Epson that had several bloked nozzle bits that wouldn't clean. Different make, but probably the same principle. I removed all the cartridges and used a straw to pick up a little nail varnish remover - (probably not the right stuff but it worked for me) put the straw into the...

Upgrade suggestions to 775 based system

I built a system three years from OC using: Epox EP-5EGA+Intel 915 VGA (MB-041-EP) Intel P4, 540J Prescott 3.2GHz (800FSB) (CP-058-IN) OCUK Value 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel kit (MY-004-OK) It works well for my applications - Photoshop, internet, some video...

    Samsung LCD Glass

I am looking for a 24" monitor, but it MUST have the Samsung LTM240M2-L02 glass inside. None of the suppliers is willing to guarantee the type of glass - other than saying revision A04 (Dell) or R (Samsung). Does anybody know exactly which panel has this? I don't mind buying new or second...

    Hanns-G HW191D Thread (Now £107.95 @ OcUK)

I have been thinking about one of these or a Viewsonic 2025 at twice the price +. Is there a lot to be gained from the extra resolution when used for photo editing, Word and internet? I am not interested in gaming at all. The Hanns one is 1440 x 900 and 19" Viewsonic is 1680 x 1050 and...
