    Camera filters: CPL, UV (0)

Non digital polariser (also known as a linear polariser) can mess with a DSLR camera's metering system so best to stick with a CPL. I also use digital protector filters - if you use a decent brand then you shouldn't see any drop in quality. Also agree with the comments regarding a lens hood -...

Canon 5D still a viable camera?

85mm 1.8 is a cracking lens - probably Canon's sharpest non-L prime. It's a great focal length on FF so I'd definitely grab one. Until recently I had a 50mm 1.8 but wasn't overly impressed with it (think I had a bad copy) so I'd maybe consider the 50mm 1.4 if you can stretch to it.

    Bridge cameras and flash guns

"Optical slave flash" is probably a better term since it's one that triggers based on another flash. You get flashes which have a slave mode which is triggered via Infrared which won't work in your case.

Canon 5D still a viable camera?

Correct, just the screen. But you learn to work with the histogram for exposure and checking focus - well you can tell if it's wildly out of focus :) It is a bit of pain for shallow DOF but not impossible. I've happily used it with 85mm 1.8 and 135mm F2 wide open. You do have to be careful...

Canon 5D still a viable camera?

I've still got mine and used it for the first time in a while 2 weeks ago - still got a soft spot for it. The files have got a certain quality to them. Sure it's got it's weaknesses but given the what they can be had for, it's a great camera to use while saving for a 5D3.

    Free portfolio sites

I quite like 500px - while it's primarily a Flickr type setup (upload pictures, people can favourite/comment, etc.), they also give you the ability to host a portfolio as well which is stand-alone and assign categories, etc. It's been a while since I've used it and can't remember what...

How many photos do you take before you get a keeper?

I'm not too worried about the keeper rate generally - if you're taking a picture of a building (for example), I'd quite happy take multiple shots from different angles and if one of those was a keeper then i'd be happy. No point in having lots of very similar pictures - pick one and run with it...

    Canon 650D announced

It's an interesting camera - some nice additions there but I think the price is just over the acceptable price range for this type of camera (remembering who the xxxD is marketed to). I get the feeling that Canon are probably trying to keep their cash reserves up however that needs to be...

    Cheap Camera Shop

I bought my 135L from them - was a good 200 quid cheaper than anywhere else. Phoned them up to confirm when it would be shipped/delivered and were very helpful. Seem to get good reviews on TP as well. I believe they are HK grey imports but believe they're shipped from within the UK and you get a...

135L for me. Although sounds like I should give the 35L a bash at some point too :)

first SLR Nikon D3100 worth having?

For Canon, the AF motor resides within the lens (part of the spec of the EOS mount). As stated above, Nikon has lens with/without focus motors (50mm 1.8D/G - G being the one with the motor) as well as bodies (D3x00, D5x00, D40/D50 I think all come without body motors, D90/D7000/D700/D300/etc...

    The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Bought a 135L two weeks ago - absolutely love it :D Easily the best lens I've ever bought and got it for cracking price. And today's purchase was at the other end of the scale - picked up a Holga 120N and some 120 B&W film. Fancied playing around with some film so thought i'd give it a go. If...

    Lack of sharpness

Aside from potential back/front focusing, it sounds like you're using the 70-300 wide open (i.e at it's max aperture of 4 or 5.6). Rarely are lenses great when you shoot "wide open" and can look a little soft unless you close down the aperture (try f/8.0). Certainly if you're shooting with L...

New to DSLR - Help me please guys

If you can get a 500D + kit lens new or 2nd hand, it's a great place to start. It's what I started with and I loved it (the 500D IS kit lens which was the mkii version of the 18-55mm IS was pretty decent for a kit lens). What I would say is that while certainly your second lens should be a 50mm...

    FIrst HDR attempt with photomatix

To be fair I'm looking at it on a 2007 Macbook which is probably pretty far from a calibrated monitor :) Actually just checked it on my iPad - and it looks better (sky looks blue) but my eye still says there's a slight orange tint to it (or there's an orange tint to my eyes :D )

    FIrst HDR attempt with photomatix

White balance looks a little out to me - there's a definitely a red/orange tint to the picture (the clouds are the give away). Think that's also causing the sky to go slightly green in colour.

Image quality and megapixels, little has improved.

Aside from the fact that megapixel count isn't a quantitive measure of image quality, I think most sub £100 cameras are much of a muchness (although the same can be said of entry-level DSLRs). I think technology has moved on...but now, you've got to pay more for it I'm afraid. I think more R&D...
