    HDMI to SCART conversion

OK the problem is I'm looking at media streaming devices. Most have HDMI output, very few have Scart. I have a Panasonic 32" CRT with SCART. Now I've looked at both Plasma and LCD TV's for nearly a year and to be honest nothing comes close to the quality of the CRT, especially wrt to contrast...

AMD Cache Question (512 vs 1MB)

From experience with both the 3500+ and 3700+ whilst benchmarks may show an advantage there is zero benefit from the extra cache in real world apps. I have each in two systems same config otherwise and I can't tell the difference. However the 3700+ core may overclock better if that's what you...

    "The worlds best processors"

You what..!!!? You are kidding aren't you ! Ask some people who run servers for a living. Concurrency = performance, why do you think AMD et al are moving from dual to quad core. The x86 boys found out later than most that clock speeds can't keep increasing so the whole multi core thing...

    "The worlds best processors"

Just for Intel's information this is the worlds best processor... http://www.sun.com/processors/UltraSPARC-T1/index.xml While not something you will see in your desktop, at 8 cores and 4 threads per core this is effectivley 32 cpu's on a chip. True innovation.

    4200+ x2 upgraded to a 4600+ x2(939)

I think Intel's bigger cache reflects their dependency on longer pipelines. A pipeline stall incurs a huge overhead as the entire pipeline must be flushed and refetched. If some of the refetch is already in cache this irons the bump out a bit. An extra 512K of cache is really neither here nor...

    4200+ x2 upgraded to a 4600+ x2(939)

I am not sold on the benefits of the extra cache. I have two systems same mobo, ram, andGFX, one 3500 one 3700 and I can't detect any difference. I'm sure they differ slightly in terms of performnce numbers but I can't TELL the difference. I'm also not sure that Windows and it's apps can yet...

    Nvida CPU/GPU combined by 2008?

I'd say it would be a low end GPU anyway designed for the masss market, and media systems anyway. Not an enthusiasts GPU.

How do I verify my new X2 4200 is working in Windows?

Yes I have installed the patch/driver. Task manager shows only one cpu. CPUZ reports the correct cpu type but only lists 1 core/ 1 thread. I spend 95% of my time in Solaris and use W2000 for games so excuse me if this is a stupid question by the way!

How do I verify my new X2 4200 is working in Windows?

OK I have the following setup: Dual boot system - Solaris 10 06/06 and Windows 2000 Professional. I've just swapped my A64 3700+ for a shiny new X2 4200 and the bios recognises it immediatley. I boot back into Solaris 10 and I now have 2 cpu's .... this is too easy! Wait a minute, Windows...

    Router with a flexible firewall

Most of those I have looked at that allow port forwarding do it globally, i.e. you can't limit the connectivity based on source address, the port is open for all as would be typical for a web server. Cisco's would do it but are a bit pricey. What I need is a firewall that would block all...

    Router with a flexible firewall

I'm looking for an ADSL router with a firewall that's very configurable. I need to be able to block all inbound traffic except traffic originating from one IP address, to one IP address, and using one designated port number say 15000. This router will be used to handle 99% inbound traffic and...

    SPDIF v L/R/C Channels

I think your ears are deceiving you! No matter whether you use coax or optical, the payload in the bitsream is identical. So unless one type of cable is so rubbish as to be introducing errors into the stream they will both sound identical - and any any cable that can't do less than 2Mb/s error...

    5400 RPM Time to upgrade?

Sorry I should also point out the sight downside of faster disks, i.e. they draw more power and run hotter. However if your PSU is reasonable the cooling shouldn't be a problem

    5400 RPM Time to upgrade?

The rotational speed of the drive has a direct impact on how fast the drive can serve up data. A 7200rpm disk will be a big plus, also a new disk will hava more effiecient cache and probably lower seek times. FYI the norm in the server world is now 15000rpm.

    Difference between VP191b and VP930

Thanks for your replies. I'll still be keeping the CRT for games etc on a dual monitor setup, the LCD would mainly be used for coding etc and the location I have in mind requires wall mount so it has to be LCD. I did like the overall quality of the vP191b before, particularily compared to the...
