Dad surrendering his license, wants me to have his car...

The C180 doesn't have a great reputation. They are not exactly reliable, it's auto and it's from an era of Mercedes where their galvanisation processes were laughable. The other is one of the last bulletproof Volvos made with one very reliable euro3 diesel lump. They do not rot and they do not...

    Luxury car for £6000...

I see nothing but common issues for any 10 year old 133k diesel car. Condensor maybe a tad unlucky but this is JLR. As for the belt slipping a tooth that sounds like a monkey didn't do his job properly. A timing belt change is as successful as the monkey carrying out the job that day on that...

    Luxury car for £6000...

Maybe opt for the Disco 3 then for that budget and can set aside a decent maintenance fund. They do go wrong but I'd say in other areas than the actual important /expensive stuff ( running gear / engine). If you are hands on the disco 3 forums are excellent and full of knowledgeable engineering...

    NIO Cars

They also are now working with Qualcomm for their next generation cockpit / infotainment platforms (which looks like it will also soon become the hub / domain controller host for the whole car). Check out the Qualcomm event that happened a couple of weeks ago. They are looking set to dominate...

    Tumble Dryer Recommendations

You ever looked at the components of a vented dryer? It's a heat element and a fan with a hole out the back. Every vented dryer works for 20 years as they are so simple! The point is they generally consume between 1.5 - 2.5 kw. My heat pump dryer kicks out between 400-500w. Of course it won't...

    Show Us Your Motors!

In broad daylight too on a busy roundabout :D I do tend to cringe at this sort of stuff. I mean cmon, it's 2020 :p

    Occasional long distance estate ~£3k

Avoid the the XCs. They add complications which suddenly make a cheap bullet proof well galvanised volvo a potentially expensive one. Same with the gearboxes, the autos will be a weak point so manual is a must. Ideally an SE or a Lux. Oh and the seats are epic.

    Occasional long distance estate ~£3k

What he said. Although it's generally 55 plates when all the emission crap came in on these models. So the 04, 54, 05 plates are the ones you want. D5, manual with fsh/ frequent oil changes and you'll be dandy. One of the few remaining truely reliable diesels around, and just so happens to...

    New VW ID 4 Reveal

The augmented reality platform that'll be in the higher end ID3/ID4s looks quite impressive. Certainly better than the new S Class' anyway with all its technological might. Meanwhile musk is still hooked on promising the world full av autopilot (despite all the amounting problems or incoming...

At what point do you scrap a car?

It's clearly a mystery to you as the 107 is essentially a Toyota in drag :p they are built to a budget, sure, but they are darn reliable. Back to the OP, if the garage is a trusted one (bit odd to suggest all shocks have failed?), then just do the work. All of those repairs are wear and tear...

I keep aquiring these little spikey snuffle creatures...

T'was the grey variety yes. I was able to get them up to Secret World, who are licensed to rehab them and have a few official release spots within the UK. But yes, very few of these charities have the licenses to do so.

I keep aquiring these little spikey snuffle creatures...

Good on you. These poor buggers need every bit of help they can get. As has been said keep them watered and fed until you can get them to your nearest hedgehog sanctuary. May be worth looking out for any others? Had the same thing with baby squirrels last year. Was fantastic to see them...

The constant fear of the door basher

Followed a car with the following sticker on the boot t'other day. 'I have kids. Park too close and they will ding your ****' I had to double take  Only in Britain :D

    MK1 X5: Yay or nay?

Only thing letting the Lexus range down is you are pretty limited to a saloon style. Both great shouts though. The volvo V70 in D5 form is probably the only estate from the euro 3 era that is absolutely solid. Get a 54 to 55 plate one (pre dpf) with some service history (tbh most have full) and...

    Cookeh goes shedding...

Just to add to the contrasting side that these cars are really not as bad as you make them out to be. The motor itself is a solid cam-chain Toyota unit that easily achieves diesel economy. Ok they don't have any power at all but fine as long as you use the rev range. The bodies generally are...
