Thanks, I've tried doing both to no avail. Tried doing a fresh install in AHCI mode again. It gets as far as installing updates but when it reboots, the system either hangs when the Windows logo screen appears or it says Disk Read Error, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot.

Yes, it's been properly seated and plugged in correctly and has plenty of power to it. Motherboard did protest a bit after I'd put another card in but appears to be fine now. A red led came on also on the GTX280 after I'd put it back in that hadn't been on beforehand. Don't think that's a good sign.

Yes, 3DMark06 wouldn't get past the first test before locking up with stock cooler at 100% fan speed at 648core. The lower temp with the ACAE seems to have made the difference. All of the card gets cooled. For an extra 27Mhz on the core it wasn't worth £35 but i'd bought it with the card...
