SG05 will NOT fit a 4870 without mods. You'll have to use a 4850 instead - probably a good thing as they are single slot leaving you a little more space for whatever you want in the case. Link above has a full list of compatible high end cards as well, if you feel like something different.

You could just back up the files onto the laptop, format it on your desktop and then copy the files back. Sometimes it's just less effort to do what it asks than work out why it's asking it :p Of course, this may be bad if external drives>laptop drive.

I'm pretty sure this is a USB stick limitation, not a Windows issue. Any OS would end up having the same problem copying lots of little files to a USB stick.

The 4870 @ £100 is probably a lot better bang for buck than a £150 4890, as the 4890 isn't 50% better than the 4870. The 4850 is probably on equal bang for buck footing as the 4870 though. But yeah, wait and see what happens with the 5xxx series. That's probably your best move.
