Quick update for those who are interested :) I tested the sound bar by connecting it directly to the TV, but instead of trying to get sound through one of the HDMI sources, I tried one of the built-in apps, as recommended by pepp77. The sound bar worked fine, so I think the issue I was facing...

I originally had it turned on but in my investigations I used a utility on my MacBook to scan the area and find the least conjested channel for the 5Ghz network and chose that.

Just throwing another option into the mix. You could try a asp.net c# with Visual Studio 2012 Express for Web and Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition 2012. Will allow you to learn something new and also get experience in a widely used platform used in industry.
