    My experience with Linux

Don't get me wrong, I am no Linux expert, but I have setup Ubuntu server (no gui) with mediawiki and also use it as a NAS. I am also reading several Ubuntu books and many websites to improve my understanding. People choose Ubuntu because it looks simple and is starting to be more like...

    My experience with Linux

I've been using 12.04 as an 2nd boot on my aging gaming system, but just can't seem to get TF2 to run in Steam. It keeps complaining about packages not being installed, so you Google it. I removed all the listed packages, ran the commands etc and then tried to run the ATI installer package...

    Best 1Tb for £65

The F2 drives are nearly as quick, but don't get as hot, from what I've read. The F2's will still wipe the floor with my drive of 3-4 years ago.

    Hello Furmark Goodbye 8800GT

I think it's gone past the oven stage. Normally the oven stage is if there is no signs of physical damage. I think it can be down to poor solder joints, that can be slightly re melted when stuck in the oven.

    Hello Furmark Goodbye 8800GT

People still do buy them, normally if you have the stock cooler fitted. Some people repair stuff like this for a living, and to them it would be bargain. I doubt it's Futurmarks fault, but the software is designed to stress the cards to find out how powerful in a graphics sense they are.

Megahalem with 2 noctua fans push pull

I know people say use a small grain of rice sized amount. I tend to put a small amount on and then spread it out with an old credit card, but there is always enough that I can't see the metal. In the days of my old Barton core XP2500 I used to lap the heat sink, but never saw more than a...

    Ping issues on home network

~Steps back and shakes head. My apologies, for some reason I completely skipped the fact he changed to a cable from wireless. Unrelated now, but I'm sure you can have multiple DNS servers listed, which a server/pc will try to resolve until it can get a response? It's funny how past...

    Virtual Mac OS X?

Backup Backup Backup. Please make sure you have a backup of your main disk, as if you wipe/partition the wrong drive you might be up a creek somewhere with no paddles. If your external drive is big enough, partition it so you have enough space for your main drive backup, and then space left...

    iBook G4

Can you not get new batteries for the iBooks any more? A new battery usually makes a world of difference. I know some of the new netbooks have a stated long life, but not all of them. Some are still rated at 3 hours. Don't assume that a netbook will keep going for 7-8 hours on battery...

Megahalem with 2 noctua fans push pull

Wow, those i7's do run toasty. I would have thought his cooler with two fans on would have given him lower temps, even taking into account a thicker layer of goop. What difference can you expect from an ultra thin layer compared to a "thick" layer?

    Ping issues on home network

In his posts he is pinging a Name, which if I'm not mistaken will have to be resolved by a device somewhere. I asked him to ping the IP address to rule out a DNS issue, which I know can cause connection issues. The fact he can ping an adress and get varying results does make me think it's not...
