    Another XP problem

Practically all motherboards will look for boot information on IDE's by default and if NO boot information is present its end of story!! When you install XP on a SATA drive with a rig that also has an IDE drive XP places boot information on the IDE hard drive directing the motherboard to the...

    Should I replace Maxtor PCB

Personally I would meter the cap to find out it's value and then solder in a replacement. The Hd may work fine now but I can guarantee that the removal of that cap will significantly effect the Hd's MTBF.

It’s Over Between Me & Norton!

Symantec (Nortons) AntiVirus Corporate.v9.0.2.1000 Final = The Best AV .... period!! Then again though it's a little out of your budget range (ie £150-£200) Totally agree mate, hence why I have not bothered to update to Nortons Corp 10. I'm a separates man not HiFi if you know what I...

Does this seem like a good idea?

Having a 10k Raptor instead of a RAID0 array for your OS partition is better imo as windows benefits greatly from the low Random Access as it constantly has to access many little files. Personally I would get a Raptor (partition it into at least 2 partitions (5-10Gb C)) then get an...

Help With Choosing An External Hard Drive

Much better and often cheaper to DIY! That way you can get a decent reliable hd (Seagate) and buy a decent case to chuck it in. Then you will have an external Hd with 5 years warranty instead of the crippled warranties that are supplied with external hd's.

    Should I replace Maxtor PCB

You have to also take into consideration that the initial fault could have been mechanical which then in turn blow out the component on the controller?!? So you could end up with 2 dead controllers and 2 completely useless Hd's?!? Personally I would tell him it's knackered and to keep his...

    Hitachi or Seagate?

If it's going to be partitioned and have XP/OS installed on it then I would get the faster IBM/Hitachi drive, if however it's going to just be used as storage then the Seagate would be the better option simply because it comes with a 5year warranty instead of the IBM's 3.

    Bitrates for MP3's?

Stop posting incorrect information then!! A 192kbs Ogg or Musepack is far better quality than a 192kbs VBR lame, ask any professional audio encoder, decent release group ...etc. A very good in-depth comparison: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/lofiversion/index.php/t36465.html

    Bitrates for MP3's?

Utter rubbish, both Ogg & Musepack are far better codecs then dog old LAME! But hey if you want your compressed audio twice as big as it needs to be then by all means carry on using LAME...

    'prime stable'

S & M really tests cpu/memory stability the best imho. Gets the CPU a good 5C's hotter than any other stability tester I have seen! 100% load & Long test = True hardware stability tester. Had many overclocks pass 8-10 hour primes to then fail after 40mins on S&M, now I don't bother with...

Spec me a cheap SCSI setup

My understanding of it is that you only need a terminator on the SCSI cable if you use 80-pin hd's as 68-pin 15k scsi hd's can be terminated with jumpers on the actual hd!? (could be wrong but this is the information a SCSI seller on ebay told me) P.S) My £15 cable did come with a...

    Portable drive speed

http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/en/menuitem.72e3cabd3a6a384ccf1824a0eac4f0a0/ The fact that they use similair power requirements as other 5.4k 2.5" hd's means they will not run a great deal hotter. Superb drives if you are after a 2.5" hd with desktop Hd performance :-)

Spec me a cheap SCSI setup

Go for 68-pin as 80-pin needs more expensive u320 cables with terminators + most new decent 15k u320 hd's are 68-pin. I got a brand new Adaptec ASC-39320 (DUAL channel) SCSI card off ebay for the bargain price of £70 inc VAT
