Keep your £60. In real world use you would not tell the difference between the two at stock speeds. If the bios allows you to overclock then the difference could easily be matched or surpassed.

The single platter 320gb is the WD3200AAKS. Be careful though as the old 320gb is 2x160gb, and the new one is 1x320gb.

Access time of the Samsung is a bit higher than the WD. Is that to do with these settings you guys are talking of ?

Question as title really - which 640gb is the one to go for ? Samsung or Western Digital. I'd appreciate as many opinions as possible, I'll be ordering soon. I'm currently leaning towards the WD as I've bought a few of their drives and they've been faultless. Noise levels are important to me...

Samsung prices are very cheap at the moment, their 500gb model can be had for the cheapest, sub £45 in places. Personally I have a 500gb Western Digital (5000aaks) that is quiet and fast, you pay a bit more for these though, £50ish. You probably won't go far wrong with many manufacturers...

Do you need more storage ? Can your new PC build budget afford a new hard drive ? A new hard drive will definitely be faster than a 5yr old model. Storage prices have dropped loads recently, 500gb <£50. You could sell the 120gb for a few £ towards the upgrade, probably not worth much more...
