As an alternative to the buntu's (and mintbuntu), you could try PCLinuxOS. Try the PCLinuxOS 2007 liveCD for a bit, then wait for the if 2009 new edition to install it if you want to go further. It's pretty user and ex-windows user friendly and tries to do most everything through the GUI.

That's a very good one, a lot of depth and angles in that one. (and it's not just OS manufacturers at it either, certain hardware manufactures too :()
