    System won't POST after crash

    I was playing TF2 last night, and my system suddenly lost power, and then came back on with the GPU fan at full throttle, but no display output, and seemingly no other activity. Since then I haven't been able to get it to POST at all. It starts up, and I hear a couple of beeps as normal, then...

    Windows 7 RC to full version - confused!

    To clarify: if you opt not to reformat (i.e keep your old data), will your files be left as they are on the HDD? I understand that the installation program will save your windows and program files folders, but what about everything else on the drive?

    PC Graphics won't improve for 3-4 years.

    They're lesser leaps, but what about Oblivion in 2006 and FEAR in 2005? And CoD in 2003, for that matter. I definitely think the rate of advancement has slowed down, which is evidenced by the lack of change in system requirements.

    XBOX 360 graphics

    What does it share exactly? ATI said that Xenos was about on par with the X1800 XT, at least running the Toy Shop demo. It has 48 ALUs like the X1900, but these have to handle pixel and vertex workloads, and it's clocked lower than the X1900 XT/XTX (500 MHz vs. 625/650 MHz) Considering...

    Spec me a low priced pci-e but not rubbish :P

    Well, the 9600 GT should be around your price range and is faster than the 4670, (though slower than the 8800 GT) so I would get that instead.

    5870 full performance update in cat 9.12 drivers

    ATI's 'performance' drivers have generally been pretty disappointing (Crossfire notwithstanding) so I'm not holding my breath.

    Upgrading my graphics card !?

    I guess the 5850 will be about 15% faster and the 5870 will be about 33% faster. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_5850/30.html I would get a 5870 if you're going to upgrade. Though, it's not especially good value for money, so if you're happy with your current performance (and...

    ATI 5970 Engineering Sample

    Seriously, how long is that card? There's not much point in winning back the 'performance crown' if no one can fit your card in their case!

    My games keep telling me my graphic card isnt good enough??? Powercolor 5870??

    Don't trust the in-game 'benchmark'; they're nearly always wrong. Your 5870 should be owning everything at 720P. Even Crysis at very high should run great at that resolution. Why not pick up something demanding like Crysis/Crysis Warhead or Stalker: Clear Sky, or ARMA 2.

    So do i have this right???

    The GTX 280 was about as fast as the 9800GX2, overall. Eg: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Point_Of_View/GeForce_GTX_280/25.html And that was because the clocks on the 280 were so dissappointing: the shader core in the 9800 GX2 being clocked 16% higher. The GTX 285 put things right...

    So do i have this right???

    Well, the new generation just needs to offer more than 70% more performance, to beat out its multi-GPU ancestor, I think. And I don't think it's especially unrealistic to have such expectations, given the fact that they've been met in the past (the 4870 was more than double as fast as the...

    Students = Cheap windows 7

    AFAIK, this is unknown. We know you can do a clean install with an upgrade copy (otherwise the XP users wouldn't be able to upgrade), but we don't know if there needs to be a copy of XP or Vista already on the disc first.

    So do i have this right???

    Except the GTX 295 beats the 5870 in far more benchmarks than the 5870 beats the 295 in.

    So do i have this right???

    According to the techPowerUP review, the 5870 beats the GTX 275 in 4 out of 19 games (CoJ, Stalker, Stalker: Clear Sky, Quake 4). Overall, the 295 is 15% faster at 1920x1200. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_5870/30.html According to the PCGH review, the 5870 beats the GTX...

    5770 = 4770?

    So your point is that eventually performance differences become meaningless when you can't render a game at above 20 FPS, anyway? Well, so what? I mean that basic point applies no matter what the differential is. I mean card A may be 15 times more powerful than card B, but if you're running at...

    ATI 3850X2

    The 3850 is about as powerful as the 9600 GSO (well, the DDR3 version), so it will be almost like adding another 9600 in SLI. It should put you on par with a 4850/9800 GTX. That's pretty good for £56. Though it probably is worth spending the extra £11 on a 4850 to get that level of...

    One Card is Not Better Than Two

    They ditched the Quake 3 engine with CoD2, and have been using their own proprietary engine since. "According to Infinity Ward, Call of Duty 2 is using all-new tech for the sequel, including a proprietary graphics engine to replace the Quake 3-powered system from before. "[We're] not using...
