To clarify: if you opt not to reformat (i.e keep your old data), will your files be left as they are on the HDD? I understand that the installation program will save your windows and program files folders, but what about everything else on the drive?

Don't trust the in-game 'benchmark'; they're nearly always wrong. Your 5870 should be owning everything at 720P. Even Crysis at very high should run great at that resolution. Why not pick up something demanding like Crysis/Crysis Warhead or Stalker: Clear Sky, or ARMA 2.
