Windows Server 2016 backup with ReFS

I've got my home server running Windows Server 2016, and have the built in Windows Server Backup set for a daily backup from one drive to another, pretty basic stuff. Both drives are formatted in ReFS, which should use archive flags so only files that are changed get backed up. But this is not...

    ReFS incremental backup possible?

As title really, I believe in the initial version of ReFS, incremental backup wasn't a possibility. I know there was something about ReFS not storing metadata like NTFS, so the archive flag didn't exist for it to be set for incremental/differential backups. I'm wondering if that's still the...

    BT Home Hub wifi problem

I think he was referring to splitting out the 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs. 802.11 protocols allow both to use the same SSID and then will upgrade devices to 5GHz if they are compatible. As for using the same channel, 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels are miles apart on the spectrum.

    BT Home Hub wifi problem

It's something I will have to check again, but I'm pretty sure I did opt-out of that when I last looked at it. Absolutely stupid idea that, have every home hub broadcasting 4 separate networks, then in a block of flats they're all smart-channel hopping constantly finding the quietest channel!

    BT Home Hub wifi problem

I actually tried disabling the smart channel system (it's just channel hopping to a less noisy channel if you have a lot of neighbours on wifi), but since they're in a very wifi-quiet area I didn't think it would help, and it didn't. I really think it is just number of devices on the single AP...

    BT Home Hub wifi problem

I will have to check next time I'm over there if it's a separate modem. Any ideas for replacements? The Asus AC88U looks good, but it's a bit steep at £210, anything under £150?

    BT Home Hub wifi problem

My girlfriend's family has BT fibre, with the usual home hub etc. I'm not certain of the exact model. The wifi will just stop working, still connected, but browsing facebook on phone/ipad, watching youtube, anything will just buffer for 30-60 seconds. I'm pretty handy with networking, but I...

    Windows Server 2016 email notifications/warnings

Wow! that looks pretty amazing, especially as it's freeware (upto 100 sensors), thanks for pointing it out! :D

    Windows Server 2016 email notifications/warnings

I'm not unfamiliar with Powershell, I used it to create my storage spaces pools, using some old SSDs as write caches etc, because the GUI isn't complete for that purpose. I'll have a dig, but it's nice to know it's all there, thanks :)

    Windows Server 2016 email notifications/warnings

As title really, is there any built-in email functionality for Windows Server 2016 for warnings/notifications? I'm specifically after HDD/storage/backup warnings, since I don't tend to remote into my home server sometimes for 3-4 weeks at a stretch. So if a HDD starts getting URE faults, I...

    Ironwolf 8TB write speeds horrendous!

Well, if I start getting failures I will reconsider, for now though, the cardboard baffle seems to be helping matters pretty well, and I haven't had a disk go bad in that box yet. Got my 8TB helium Red today, am I the only one who gets excited about storage? :P

    Ironwolf 8TB write speeds horrendous!

I know this is very unreliable, going by touch, I'd say 60-70. I have now put a cardboard divider in the case so the fans have to blow through the drives, there's nowhere else for the air to go, and since I've had that in it's been fine, though I haven't felt how hot it is. I had no idea...

    Ironwolf 8TB write speeds horrendous!

Just an update to this... it was overheating. I have a Silverstone DS380, pretty much the smallest case you can fit 8 hot-swappable HDDs in. The airflow is pretty bad, specifically around the HDD enclosure. My other drives are 5900RPM and run cooler, the ironwolf is 7200RPM and between other...

    Ironwolf 8TB write speeds horrendous!

Bought a brand new Ironwolf 8TB hdd after being a total WD disciple because it was £40 less than WD Red 8TB. Got it in my server, write speeds are awful, as in it may be faulty... I've got it set up as a simple volume, single GPT partition, no encryption, no storage spaces etc, and copying...

Indeed and it came back totally wrong, multiple attempts spat out two different suggestions, both miles away :/

    Name that tune!

I found a video with it in full, still pretty stumped as to what the tune is called... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfptsI6yUt4

Windows boot manager not showing up after fresh install

The SSD is a good two years old. I can't say for certain if it's defective or just incompatible with UEFI. It has 15000+ working hours on it, that's getting on for 2 years online, as it was a cache drive for a storage space in my microserver. Still completely healthy, had been using it in a...

    Best temp monitoring program?

Wow, really? I mean I've heard of OCD but.... Anyway, both programs can change font + size so they will look the same, I just have better things to do with my time than bother changing them... In answer to your question, I don't think you will find any programs as lightweight as this...

Windows boot manager not showing up after fresh install

So, turns out it was my Kingston SSDNow V300 60GB ssd.... Tried a firmware update, still didn't work. Tried installing on my 1TB Velociraptor, old drive but still a good 225MB/s read/write, and instant success!

Windows boot manager not showing up after fresh install

My original ISO was a pre-anniversary version. I don't think it's anything to do with the windows installation itself, but something missing between the BIOS/UEFI and the installation. It just needs to detect the Windows Boot Manager in the UEFI.
