Good Cheap Server - HP Proliant Microserver 4 BAY - OWNERS THREAD

I've got an old N40L that isn't being used, but I want to upload some of the photos on it to my portable drive. It's got WHS but it's not discoverable by my desktop or laptop when I connect to my router. It's headless so can't easily see what's going on - the main lights all come on but I...

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Out of interest, it originally crashed on old drivers when trying to build shaders. I was a bit worried about hard drive space, as Uncharted 4 is hefty in terms of disk space. I've also just updated from W10 to W11 and all is fine.

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Initial observations , bearing in mind I've only tried Uncharted 4 - I installed the card and tried it, it kept crashing. I've updated the driver (didn't realise the installation of the Intel software didn't update the driver to the latest - noddy mistake) and all seems fine. Runs in 4K on...

Cheers again to all for comments - just to close this thread off, I've ordered the Intel Arc A750.

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Farcry 3 is on the naughty list! That's a shame. I think the motherboard does support rebar, it's a MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI.

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Ta for reply. Apols for what may be a noddy question, but what problems does the Intel A750 have with older games? I've got a pretty broad brush of games on my steam account, and a few are pretty dated (Far Cry 3 era) but a few new ones such as the uncharted ones which I'm itching to try - my...

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Just a further thought, my monitor is a 32" 4K (Dell UP3216Q) which is intended mostly for phot and professional work rather than gaming, but is this a consideration in choice of graphics card? I'm sure I can live without having every setting on the video set to ultra-high, but not sure if 4K...

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Thanks both for replies - I'll aim to put a little more in and take a look at the RX6600. I've had a look through the board and found a few threads bemoaning the prices of graphics cards, seems I'm not the only one a bit caught out by it!

Upgrade from ancient FirePro W4100 for light gaming - how far to go

Hi all I've recently updated my machine to a Ryzen 5 5600, but I'm still using an old FirePro W4100 graphics card. This is fine for day-to-day office work, but it's simply not up to running game at any decent resolution and I'm having problems with PC crashes when gaming, which I assume is an...

Quick upgrade to old Haswell PC for light Gaming and Lightroom

Ta all for advice - I've bought the 5600 CPU, a 550M motherboard (afraid I had to buy elsewhere due to lack of availability here) and 16GB of the 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. I'll see how it goes with the old graphics card, if it's a bit laboured I'll look to upgrade in the New Year.

Quick upgrade to old Haswell PC for light Gaming and Lightroom

It was about £100ish 7 or 8 years ago, and it was a CAD-specific card so it wasn't exactly world-beating gaming performance even at that time and at that price point. Is it a massive compromise, in terms of basic CPU performance, to go for the 5600G over the 5600? If so, I can hang on with...

Quick upgrade to old Haswell PC for light Gaming and Lightroom

Great, many thanks I'll keep an eye on boards, are the A520M worth a look in case they're available before the B550s?

Quick upgrade to old Haswell PC for light Gaming and Lightroom

Hi all I've updated my old PC with a larger SDD and a bequiet! case, but it's really starting to slow down. It's been built up incrementally through time so not sure what to keep and what to bin. Intel Core i5-4440 3.10GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail Asus H81I-Plus Intel H81...

New Case for (very) old Mini-ITX - leaving room for upgrade

Ta mate, much appreciated, will give that a look. Might also check out the silent cases, that seems to be an option which I'd not noted before -the bitfenix is a bit of a hairdryer when it gets going so some peace and quiet would be well received

New Case for (very) old Mini-ITX - leaving room for upgrade

Hi all My old Bitfenix case has broken - the flexible plastic base has perished- and it's a pretty sorry state. It was a little bit too 'flashy' anyway, and I'm looking for an understated, compact case to replace it (no flashy lights etc) I'd like to leave capacity to upgrade the components...

Upgrading or replacing 2012 HP Microserver

Thanks all for comments. I think WHS is for the bin, I'll look into the NAS drives as I don't think I need a full server and don't really want the hassle of build and admin. Assume I can just drag and drop the main drives out of the server, without need to format etc? WHS is on the original...

Upgrading or replacing 2012 HP Microserver

Hi all I've been using a HP Proliant microserver for a long while, running WHS 2011 - this has never been the quickest (it's an old Turion-based box of about 2012 vintage) and although I've upgraded RAM to 6Gb it's still pretty ponderous. I use it as a document vault and simply to serve files...

decent mech gaming keyboard through KVM?

hi all my keyboard is not working well with a few keys not working properly - so expect the punctuation of this post to be terrible, i have to almost punch the shift key at this point - so i'm after a decent mechanical replacement keyboard. this would be used for both work and gaming. i use a...

WD Caviar Blue HDD proprietary SATA data connection?

Is it that simple? I had spare SATA cable I removed the clip from, it was pretty straightforward to strip the clip but the connector still didn't fit. I'll check online for SATA cables without the clips, not sure I've ever used any before?
