What retro things have you done today?

This weekend, I replaced the coin battery in my Win2K machine. I opened and cleaned the floppy disk drive, but it still doesn't read disks, so I think it's broken. I installed the parallel port Iomega Zip Drive 100MB too. I had two units. One unit was rattling. On inspection, there was a...

Will we ever get a rival to the PC?

No. Would you buy in to an alternative? I'm fed up of MS using 'my' desktop (and therefore PC) as an advertising billboard, and forcing my hand however they chose. But, all my games, peripherals etc. I can't be bothered to learn something new at my age. I can't run XPlane 12 on a Raspberry...

Sorry to ask the basics @Retro6 Are your speakers working? Are they plugged into the right port on the sound card spkr out / line out? And then it comes to the IRQ / DMA settings. Take note, ensuring if the card is PnP, that it's not conflicting with other resources on the PC. Have you...

Vista - yuk. I remember trying to be a pioneer and jump on when it first came out. I regretted that. I also remember MS with a terrible marketing campaign for Vista trying to fool users into thinking they were using a different operating system that was really Vista and then doing a 'reveal'...

What retro things have you done today?

I bought a new one back in 2003 and got rid years later. I paid £28 for this one back in 2018. I managed to get Flight Unlimited 3 installed by copying CD 2 and 3 to the HDD and installed from there. I also installed MS Combat Flight Simulator. With the Extigy and W2K with SP4 now...

Stamps: The most boring OCUK thread in a while

If there's any with a vintage aeroplane on them, printed upside down, I'll take them off your hands for a couple of quid. :o

For me, it's using my router (Frizbox) as an FTP server and then using Windows based software to transfer files across. I have got a machine that does have a DOS NIC Driver, but I prefer using Windows for simplicity.

What retro things have you done today?

I tried to install Flight Unlimited 3 on my W2K box. It keeps failing. I'm wasting too much time on this. :o I read the wiki on this software. Lots of effort put in creating it and sadly not reflected in the sales. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_Unlimited_III Also, loving the SB Extigy...

Try and run the Knoppix Live CD to see if it can pick up the onboard sound or one of the add in cards. If it works, you know it's your Windows install / bios setup.

    The simulation hypothesis.

Already been done. The Sims™. Also, the time thing. Always interesting watch Red Dwarf with time references. Years, minutes, ice ages. This will mean nothing to Earth outsiders.

Does anyone else struggle day by day, week by week with work?

Hello willhub. Have you spoke with your GP recently to see if there's more to this than you think? I hear what your saying, but to be employed must be better than fretting about no work and mounting bills? Having a family should be a wonderful thing? Building memories, spending quality time...

Good news everyone. Television Tim has found a replacement coil and got the Amstrad monitor working again. And the eagle eyed will see that there's a compromise. The picture works, but it now doesn't run to the edge of the screen. He said the monitor is basic, so has no manual adjustment...
