It's not a HTPC it's a 2.5" or 3.5" hard drive enclosure that just happens to double up as a media player, some better than others.

Do OcUK sell those hard drive enclosures that you fit your own hard drive into and plug into the TV so you can watch films from it, also comes with a remote control. I have seen them else where but would like to nip down to OcUK and give them my money.
Try WinAvi for ease of use or Tmpeg or CCE if you want better results. As for codecs I use Koepi's Xvid Binaries, AC3 Filter and DivX. Also use the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

360 has a 12x drive. I changed the fans in the back of my 360 for some Talismoon ones with blue LEDs, which are more powerful yet quieter than the oe ones.
Only place I know of is D&K http://www.dkmotorcycles.co.uk/dkonline/home/ here in Stoke. I have found, buying things for my blade, that fleabay is generally cheaper anyway.
