Post your FTTC line stats & unlocking info

Your connection/distance sounds very similar to mine. As far as I know only the HG612 can be hacked at the moment, and that Tandy cable should add a bit to your speeds. I recently updated the firmware on my HG612 and connected the Tandy cable and gained about 4meg in DL speed.

Post your FTTC line stats & unlocking info

I swapped my DSL cable over for the Tandy high quality one yesterday. I did so at the same time as installing the new modem firmware as I didn't want to have more than one disconnection in case DLM saw them as dropped connections. Because of this it is difficult to say which was responsible for...

Thanks for the tip; I've just ordered one. It looks to be of much better quality than the ones that are bundled with modems. Is there a preferred way to connect this new cable without it looking like a disconnection, and therefore possibly affecting the sync speed?

All fibre broadband (other than Virgin) is via BT's network. Why do you say that about TalkTalk? I've had FTTC with them for a year now and it's been great. No problems at all and definitely the cheapest.

So it's quite common for speeds to drop a little over time due to (e.g.) crosstalk, is it? A year ago I had fibre broadband installed and was getting the full 40Mb (38Mb d/l speeds) but in the last few months it has dropped to about 35Mb. I suppose this can be expected as FTTC becomes more...

Sky setup - Sky+HD before active landline?

It's not enforced because (as far as I know) it's not in the T&Cs for single box subscriptions. I've never had mine connected and Sky charged me £30 at the time of installation (four years ago) for the installer's 'inconvenience' of pairing the box manually using his mobile 'phone. So it was all...

You only need to have your STBs connected to the 'phone line if you have Multiroom.

    cleaning MBP lid

I use Magic Sponges to clean my Macbook (along with countless other objects/surfaces). They are super cheap from that auction site. You don't use any detergents/cleaning fluids; just a small amount of water. The sponge itself is ever so slightly abrasive - that's how it works. Don't be put off...

    Some sites loading, others not.

I am interested in trying Google Public DNS, but I have a question. If I adjust the DNS settings on my router will that mean the new settings apply for every device that connects to it, or will I have to also change the DNS settings on each individual device? Thanks.

They don't all have to be illicit sources, of course... Rips of your own DVDs, for example :)

Watching Sky Go & Such On iPAD - Help!

If you are able to 'acquire' videos from another source, I use Buzz Player which can play-back all video types. I use the program to copy video files wirelessly from my NAS. Highly recommended, if you're into that sort of thing!

    Classic White Macbook

I'm still using my 2007 Macbook (model 2,1). It's a Core2Duo which I upgraded a few months ago with more RAM and a bigger, faster HDD - not because it was failing, though; just wanted to update it. Anyway, it's still running like a dream, with Snow Leopard, except that the battery life is very...

Official iPad (2012 model) Accessories Thread

Do you mean the new Smart CASE? If so, yes, it does dig into the hand a bit. I will normally rest the unit on my leg or propped up with a cushion so that it's not uncomfortable for my hands. Strange that Apple saw fit to make the edges so sharp though. Oddly, I find the iPad is ever so...

    I pad 2 Broken Screen-Pictures , Options ?

I don't have any knowledge regarding repairing it, I'm afraid, but if it still works as it used to then I guess it doesn't NEED to be repaired. If money is an issue then I would continue using it as normal - maybe putting a screen protector on the front to prevent it getting any worse. Another...

    Small network storage/shelving unit

I am looking for a way to tidy up my networking devices. They are only small so a standard networking cabinet is not necessary. At the moment they are all spread out separately but ideally they would be placed one above the other, obviously with enough of a gap between each to allow airflow...

    Sky broadband

Just to clarify, if two devices were connected simulatneously - one N, and one G - would the speed drop to G for BOTH devices? i.e. Are routers able to communicate using both standards at once?
