Samsung 500GB Spinpoint T166 (HD501LJ) Best Bang For Buck Drive?

The new AAKS are great at STR, but i think their response time is pretty bad at ard 16ms, which is kinda low for 7.2k rpm hdds, which should average 15ms.

    Recommendations of SATAII Hard drives

I would recommend getting another WD740ADFD (or WD740GD, depending on which one you have currently) and put it in a Raid 0 for OS, applications and games. But do make sure that you have another hdd for storage and backup of the files on ** Raid 0 array

    RAID Decision

Once again, I think it depends greatly on your budget. If you're on a low budget, I would suggest that you use Raid 1 with 2 hdds using your motherboard's Raid controller. In addition to this, you can get an external hdd enclosure with an eSATA interface to do a regular (weekly or monthly) back...

It should suffice for me. I won't be running a lot of hdds in them anyway. 2 of them will house an Asus P5B-VM DO and a Asus P5WDG2-WS Pro motherboard. I don't see a point of getting bigger case as i wont' be able to utilise the extra 5.25" slots.

    RAID Decision

It greatly depends on your budget. Raid 5 requires a minimum of 3 hdds and its common to see 4 hdds in a Raid 5 array. It would be better to use a hardware Raid controller if you would like to use Raid 5 but they don't come cheap. Raid 0+1 requires a minimum of 4 hdds.

Its not really noisy. Resistors are added to the 2 fans at the back of the DAS to reduce the spinning speed. however, i find my PC case is noisier... :(

    RAID 0 installation trouble

You know what, try using XP drivers!!! I had that same problem and i managed to install Vista using XP drivers on my Asus P5WDG2-WS Pro and Asus P5B-VM DO. Worth a try. And since you've already created a Raid 0 array, there should only 1 unpartitioned array shown.
