Home Insurance for a few months

Yeah, this is right. This will be your most expensive option. Definitely don’t just stop paying either - defaulting on a credit agreement won’t do you any good. I’d talk to an insurance broker re. the other two options.

    Smoke Alarm

You can pick your desired combination of alarm types and interlink them here: https://smartdetect.co.uk/ I bought a few of these around the house for various electrics. I may have gone slightly over the top - I figured £160 for 6 alarms for 10 years was fine after a house on the street burnt...

    Which Smart Thermostat?

Wiser is very much in the self install territory. If you have a standard programmer backplate, no wiring required - just need to switch out. I understand Tado is self-install too. Less sure on the others. Evohome felt a step up on the installation complexity, when I was deciding which to go for.

    Looks great!

Struggling with Smart Thermostats and full Open Therm integration

Have you contacted Drayton Wiser about this? They still advertise that they support OpenTherm which would be dubious if they haven’t / weren’t planning to upgrade this.

    Which Smart Thermostat?

I’ve had the Drayton Wiser system for 4 years and very happy with it too. Positives: - Simple app to use - Prompt responses from support - Works with Google Home (e.g. hey google, what’s the temp in the kitchen? Or hey google, boost the temp in the kitchen) - Works with IFTTT so you can...

Any downsides to a smart meter?

If you work from home, that’s perfect. Laundry & dishwasher on overnight/in the morning and avoid the 4-7pm peak rates. Your laptop and monitors don’t use huge amounts of energy.

Any downsides to a smart meter?

Similar to above. I’m on Octopus Agile with rates that vary half-hourly. In combination with batteries, this reduced my average cost per kWh in January to 14.2p. Today my overnight cost was around 2p and my day cost around 15p with a peak from 4-7pm at around 32p. Comparing this to MSE, the...

How small can a home-gym realistically be?

Is the below guess right? For those of us operating in metric, that’s about 2.4x3m so over twice the size of the OP’s shed.

How small can a home-gym realistically be?

I’d go back to why you want a gym and consider whether having it in the shed solves this. My feeling is this is just too small and likely to be cold - so not that great an alternative to an outdoor run. I think put some tape in those dimensions on the patio and try your exercise routines there...

Thinking about wetroom / new bathroom.

I think you’ve made the right choice. Packing the bottom would look even neater but I wouldn’t be going there!

Solar panels and battery - any real world reccomendations?

Agree with others - it’s a bit of a pain to setup. However, there are instructions here using Home Assistant: https://github.com/springfall2008/batpred It covers the Octopus API setup, solar prediction setup etc. It’s worth it though if you’re fairly technically minded. As standard it’ll charge...

    Retrofit wet UFH

I don’t know if it’s the best but the one Kai and I linked to above works well. You can get the slightly deeper one which allows for 15mm pipes. No screed required and includes some insulation below.

3 Storey Side Extension - Am I getting scammed?

Beware - that’s going to be expensive to run! Electric is several times the price of gas. If you’re staying in this house for the long haul, I’d really recommend wet UFH.

Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

Glad to hear it’s going well! Can you see what the average kWh use was over that period? Price per unit can be quite variable between different tariffs, whether you have batteries and so on. The agile prices were negative overnight during Christmas/NY, so less representative of what we’ll see...

Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

Most of the current heat pumps are horrendously ugly. Thankfully a few are starting to come that look a bit smarter and have grey options which stand out less than the white box.

Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

I’ve recorded a short video of mine for comparison. 16kW ASHP running at about 5kW output. Note the smoother sound rather than the slightly clunky sound.

Heat Pumps: anyone have one/thought about it?

Agree - not normal. Sounds like something has gone -fan bearings maybe? I’m just a homeowner so no idea but sounds like it’s time to get it serviced and repaired!

    Retrofit wet UFH

He’s just installed a brand new boiler (from his extension thread). Sounds like he wasn’t in a position to consider a heat pump time-wise. I have the same UFH setup with a heat pump and it works well.

    Retrofit wet UFH

@NoNameNoNumber if you send an email to the supplier Kai linked to above with a copy of your floor plan and an explanation of what you want, they’ll spec the underfloor heating for you and give you a cost for all the materials you need (incl manifolds, pumps, adhesives etc). You’ll then need to...
