At the 2k end of the scale you're pretty safe from one modern enough to have a dpf. My 2008 jetta doesn't have one but it does have a rattly very noisy dmf!

Am still on the fence about installing this on my laptop! Don't really need the new directx etc as it only has a nvs 4200m so cs:s and cs:go are about its limits! Any major reason to get it installed or should I just leave it in the knowledge they'll support 7 for another four years!?

Thanks for your reply! New one on me today when at a standstill - put clutch pedal down and engage first gear very hard and car jolts forward slightly when you do get it in. If you put the clutch in and out before doing the above it goes in ok! Warranty is due to run out in two days so...

Update: car went in for a service as per warranty terms and to have g28 replaced. I got a phone call in the afternoon to say service all done, but the warranty company wouldn't pay for the g28 sensor as it wasn't a definite fix despite coming from vw technical. I've contacted vw UK...

The VW workshop manager threw out a figure of 2k for a new box from vw. It also judders when on the overrun now. Worst car I've owned and I've had some bad cars in my time ;)

They know the issue, their master tech can hear the clunking, the odd noise when loading up the box with slow turns and the whine. He said it probably is the box but blah blah risk of warranty not paying etc etc! The warranty has two weeks remaining now, this is an issue I've been fighting for...

They replaced the steering rack based on a TPI, but the car didn't meet all the symptoms of the TPI. I picked the car up, all fixed for you. Took it up the road and drove straight back due to the same damn noise. Cost involved would be their labour in removing the box which would add up...

Unfortunately they are a group mate! I could perhaps travel to Plymouth but in all honesty I don't have much faith that it'll get there. It's really whining now both on acceleration and overrun and the judder is getting worse! No fault found though! They must think its a rickety theme park ride!
