I would say spend extra on a faster CPU/more RAM than a faster VGA card for AutoCAD. Make sure you have 2Gb RAM minimum, 3Gb+ RAM will be ideal. I would have thought the 7300GT would work OK. We use 8600GT's at work on our AutoCAD PC's without any issues. We have a mix of AutoCAD 2008 & 2009...

I've installed some PNY Geforce 9400GT's at work for some low-profile Dell desktops we use. Not a fantastic card but cheap and works a treat for office apps and a bit of multimedia ! I would have thought you would struggle to find anything much more powerful than that due to heat & power issues.

No harm in doing it... If anything I think it's better to keep it defragged regularly as the drive has to do less work looking for files. Better to do it than not ! !
