Been out of the game and could do with advice/look over

Hi all, Just wondering if the below looks to be ok. Haven't touched a PC in almost 5 years due to lack of space, however now have a desk in our spare room. I need to figure out if the monitor is a bit too big/I'll be too close but think it'll be fine. Primarily looking for a quiet ish PC but...

    Checking phone line

Incorrect, any visit over the last 6-9 months (can't remember when it was implemented) socket locations, age and front plate styles (ie SSFP, standard, secure or GFAST etc) get logged as part of the closeout notes of any engineer visit.

Vodafone and poor sync speed - Any advise welcome

Vodafone routers are renown for being faulty and talk talk routers cause quite a lot of background noise and start causing HR issues and then start erroring. Not to mention the rest of the provider's. Out of all the fibre faults I go to I would say 50% are customer equipment related.

    Cable Tone Tracer

Flukes a good brand, never got on with their tone kits personally. Used lots of makes and fluke we're the only ones that were a pain to ID cables from what I remember. Greenlee Amps and oscillators have never let me down.

    Replacing Sky Phone Socket

This Also can't really tell from the last picture but it looks like an obsolete dropwire (looks like a double barrelled cable) in which case you want to get rid of that/make it accessable in the future because they can stuff broadband up a treat and supposed to get replaced if you have...

    Openreach Records

Lines are tested peridoically to check for faults or if your provider requests a test. It doesn't update the speed/records just indicates when your phone line was last tested. The speeds you're seeing when doing a DSL check are the expected speeds connected from the PCP to DP on the records...

    Openreach Records

I'd be careful with that statement, you are more than likely correct that most people will go through the new PCP, however having worked within the Openreach network nothing is guaranteed. I've been to customers that have a fibre cab a stone's throw from their door, but are fed 2km off a...

Network cables sleeve markings - new build

You will not see any CatX marking on the sheath as Copper Coated Aluminium cable is not part of the standard that network cable is ratified to (ANSI/TIA/568 or ISO 11801) which requires a solid copper wire (or solid copper strands) That's not to say it won't work to the same standard and give...

*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Damn that's pretty loud then, think I might stick with original thought of: USG-3 8 Port POE 24 Port non Poe switch as think all are fanless Don't think need more than 8 ports of power at mo and the small dip in throughput that I may have (if even need to use smart queues) probably won't...

*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

Been following this thread closely whilst doing some works on our house. Im in two minds as to what gear to get in an ideal world I would grab a USG Pro 4 and a 16 port POE switch but I'm concerned about the noise. I'm struggling to find any good vids that give you an idea of the noise from a...

Openreach to be legally separate from BT

If you think that this will mean Openreach will lay more fibre you're deluded. The exercise of setting up this new company and the legal, branding and administration costs of the split will mean less money available to invest in the network. If anything this is a backwards step as nothing will...

    Xonar D2X + Goldring DR150

I have the above card/headphone combo and am looking to replace my PC, have tried searching and from what I can see, a few years ago it was still a good combo. However, I'm just working out budgets and seeing if either ideally could do with replacing or if technology has come on leaps and...

    Flogging a dead horse?

Had a look on the bay and there are a handful, but choice is limited. looks like it's a £40 gamble or £200+ At that price I may as well sell whats here for the rough £300-£400 that it looks like its worth (+Replacement GPU and old GPU (Unless I keep that for Physx - if that still even...

    Flogging a dead horse?

Think I already know the answer to this but here goes.. Used to run an OCd i7 920 and decided to get a XEON 5675 and OC that and purchase a new GPU. Current setup is: i7920 (to be replaced with Xeon 5675) 18GB DDR3 (3x4 and 3x2) GTX260 SLI Now since it was last used about 2 years...

    New build fibre

Estate near us it took about 6 months to get installed. A new estate in Paignton, I did some work earlier in the year, had copper early on but no provision for FTTC and they were 6k from the exchange they were fed off. Don't think the customer was too happy with the 2mb they were getting -...

    Yippeee Superfast BB

Might not happen for a while/at all but G.Fast is around the corner and they will be looking to mount the equipment up telegraph poles - so 150Mbps in the sticks is very possible.

Finally getting Fibre - things to watch out for?

If you're installing a data extension (just extending the VDSL) then you want the middle one and come off the VDSL faceplate.

Hmm glad I stumbled across this, thought there was life in my rig still and think this plus a new GPU might keep it going for a couple more years :D Now to start scouring for a chip and maybe this is the push to try water which I've been wanting to give a go for the last 6 years since I...
