Will a GT520 cut the mustard?

I have a linux machine with an 8800GTS in it. There is NO need for this card, as the machine never plays games and is only used for watching videos.........which the GTS is no help with as it doesn't support any of the clever hardware decoding stuff. The card is dying........had a couple of...

    Changing to ATI from NVidia

A friend has donated his old HD5870 to me, to replace my slightly worn GTX280. I have two versions of windows (on my windows machine anyway, which is where the card is going), XP and 7(64). Assuming that it is not possible to re-install the operating systems (PARTICULARLY not the XP...

    Upgrade time?

Machine as in sig, but now with 2x2GB and 2x1GB DDR3. Hi folks. My machine is getting a little long in the tooth, but from reading raw specs I can't see where the best upgrade path is. I keep thinking a new CPU/MOBO would be good, but then, my Q6600 is quite content at 3.5GHz, which is...

No life after shipping - mobo or cpu - where to begin?

Check the P4 line to CPU.....only say that because I recently MULTIPLY tried to boot mine with it unplugged and that's pretty much the way it behaves. If your PSU is at the bottom, it's also possible something fell into it.

    HDD Access LED..voltage/current.

Thanks very much indeed. I suspected a transistor would be required but wasn't sure...that link should sort me out. ;)

    HDD Access LED..voltage/current.

Any idea what the output on your average HDD access light pinnout on a motherboard is? I can't see my access LED from my workspace and am toying with the idea of attaching a small 7 LED bar to it so the whole case internals flash in time.....but suspect it may cook something. Any thoughts on...

    Is my Motherboard stuffed?

SORTED! BAD RAM???????????? A stick of RAM had been BBQ'd by the previous power supply....and for some reason my BIOS decided that the short it was obviously causing took precedence over the fact there was a memory issue and beeped the "wrong" alarm. All is well. Thanks for help.

How can i check if my hardware is working properly

You might want to consider making a backup with acronis or ghost or just a linux boot cd....rolling a backup in takes about a hundred times less time and blood pressure than reinstalling.

Anyone moved from X48 to G41 board and kept their windows?

As an aside....what's a better option for overclocking? P45 or G41?

    Is my Motherboard stuffed?

Yeah the "pulsing" idle power cooked my USB hub and freaked out £300 quid's worth of Fanatec Porsche wheel. I'm gonna set it up on the bench again because I am SURE the first time I started it with just CPU and RAM, that it did get far enough to hand off to the hard disc boot sequence (the...

    Is my Motherboard stuffed?

I've had her stripped down and bench built :( Most components have been tested elsehwere...not te RAM though, I have no other DDR3 board. Gonna try stripping and bench building it again. I do LOVE having problems nobody has ever seen before ;)

Anyone moved from X48 to G41 board and kept their windows?

Cheers guys...that board is pushing the finances badly.....but it looks like an excellent option thanks. I have backups but will drop the SSD with XP on it into my external slot thingy (sharkoon dibber, can never get it's name right....quickport or someting) and image it before booting. I...

    Is my Motherboard stuffed?

(I posted about the earlier stages of this problem earlier....but rather than bump a rather inprecise description with new info, I thought I'd start over) Machine as in sig, only 4gb ram and a water cooling loop for cpu. Initial symptoms: Machine would stall on warm restarts, pre-post...

How many BAD SECTORS is too many BAD SECTORS

One IS too many....but I note that some drives can chuck a bad sector or two and leave it at that for years....others suffer a sort of "creeping death" as if there is actually a problem with the data holding coating on the disc flaking off.....like on tapes/floppies....the head catches or...

What is the loudest part of your set-up?

I used to have a thermaltake volcano.....more than once I was asked by persons on the phone "where are you, it's really noisy"...and once I was asked "are you at the airport or railway station or someting?"

    What's the Problem?

Boot from a live cd/usb flash drive (Ubuntu, Knoppix ,etc...all free and easy) see what happens. If that can get to the desktop....use it if possible to check temps (or just shove your hand in and grab a few things to see if your skin stays behind ;) ). May be worth trying to start it up from...
