Clapping Banned at Manchester University Student Union Events

For me, an entire room full of people doing jazz hands in silence is much more likely to trigger an anxiety attack than people clapping. Quiet rooms full of people really creep me out.

    Travelling to Japan

I stayed in the APA Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho, which was a pretty nice hotel for around 2 weeks and I don't remember it costing anything like that much. Also as mentioned by others, get a rail pass. Osaka Castle and Hiroshima are well worth visiting, Rail pass will get you there on the Shinkansen.

    The nervous wait to exchange....

Dealing with this myself at the moment. Made extra fun by online statements not being acceptable unless they are stamped by the bank and my savings account (NS&I) seeming to have no statements available at all.

What to do in Japan for 2 weeks?

Robot Restaurant (quite pricey) and the Samurai Museum (pretty cheap, staff are excellent) in Shinjuku are both worth going to.

6 points & £200 fine for phone while driving going live today

This is where things gets fun. You know what the most common punishment I see for driving without a licence is? Being banned from driving.

    Discussion of Doctored Mass Media

With all the glaring examples of media manipulation and your self professed claim to be studying the media for examples of 'mind control and propaganda' this is the example you bring to the table? The Daily Mail zoomed in on some breasts and blamed someone else? There's better websites than the...

    Recommend Fantasy Films to me

Most of the good ones have been mentioned already (Krull, Excalibur, Conan, Dragonslayer, Ladyhawke) so time for some not so good recommendations. Fancy some awful misogynistic cheese with terrible wigs? Try the Deathstalker series. If you just want cheese & terrible wigs then give Sword...

So, what is an "Offensive Weapon" anyway??

I've seen some bizarre things confiscated from people and them charged with carrying an offensive weapon. A "sharpened coke can" was probably the strangest one.

People who go into work sick - Rant

Probably because they are holding onto their sickness 'allowance' in case something serious comes up. I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to my staff being off sick but there are limits, I just sacked someone a few weeks ago for being off on 6 separate occasions since staring in September.

Do you find left handed people strange?

I'd say more sinister than strange.

Supporting information on an application form

27 essential criteria is insane. Other than that it's impossible to know the answer without knowing how it'll be sifted. Where I work you would need to cover all the essential criteria within the word count, including evidence beyond general statements to show how you meet them, you won't get...

    Anyone done Amsterdam recently ?

I was advised by the guy at the ticket counter not to bother with public transport if I wasn't going outside Centraal.

    The next Labour leader thread

Just to be clear, you believe stopping hundreds of thousands of deaths is justification for causing hundreds of thousands of deaths? Besides, I'm pretty sure Saddam did what he thought was right at the time.

    What book are you reading...

He had a ridiculously long section on eating a bowl of cereal in the Cryptonomicon, he really needs editing sometimes.

The Official OcUK EU Referendum Exit poll (and results discussion thread)

This is a local government failure, leaving the EU won't change that.

MP Jo Cox murdered in West Yorkshire [Thread title edited]

What reports have you been hearing? The ones in your head don't count.

The EU Referendum: How Will You Vote? (June Poll)

A little over half of our immigrants are from outwith the EU. Presumably they could do something about them right now if they wanted.

    Taking notes into an interview

A competency based interview is not a conversation, it's a test.

    Taking notes into an interview

I've always been encouraged to use notes for competency based interviews but that's in the civil service. Have they detailed what to expect from a competency based interview? What competencies they expect to cover etc.?
