ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR 17 Q733QSA

Congrats! I had a Strix a few years back. Lovely laptop with fantastic build quality, but I had issues with overheating and loud fan noise after six months or so. I recommend using Throttlestop to switch off turbo boost and setting your speedshift EPP to 128 (or whatever you decide after some...

    i5 Gaming Build for £1000

Yeah, I think the bundle. Gonna place an order at the end of the month. It's funny - even with import tax and shipping, it's cheaper to buy here than where I live in Norway!

    i5 Gaming Build for £1000

Dempsey, Stulid - thanks a million! I hadn't noticed that...been out of this game too long :) I reckon I will go for a Z97 with a low end i5 now, and upgrade in few years to an unlocked i7. One reason I went for the Z97 was I read somewhere it is friendly to the next 1150 Intel gen. Stulid -...

    i5 Gaming Build for £1000

After many, many years of loyal service, the time has come to put the Q6600 build in my sig out to pasture (by which I mean it is in my parents' house, shining blue lights everywhere). I want to build a nice tidy MATX that hooks up to the TV for general browsing, movies, and gaems. The...

BitFenix Phenom MATX Cube Case and H100i

If you put a full size card in (say a GTX 970) would there still be room? I am thinking of getting this case - is there comfortable clearance around the card to the radiator, or is it a tight squeeze?

    NOOB Q6600 Overclocking

Can you download and install CPU-Z? http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html It will give motherboard and RAM info - post some screenshots. To find out about your power supply, you may have to open the case or read it off the back panel.

    NOOB Q6600 Overclocking

I don't think replacing the motherboard requires a fresh OS install. You will have to update some drivers, though. Even so, a clean install from boot shouldn't take more than an hour - well worth the effort! Think of it as colonic irrigation for your PC. OP, let us know the specs of the rest...

    NOOB Q6600 Overclocking

Welcome aboard! What other components are in the machine? I'm assuming the CPU is a Q6600. What is the graphics card, RAM, PSU...? If you want to get into overclocking, it may be nice and handy to replace the motherboard and maybe the RAM and away you go! Some very decent cheap boards available.

    Engineering University Choices...

As has been said previously: strongly recommend going for a Russell Group uni. Sign up for an MEng course, and make sure it is accredited with IMechE/RAeS/whoever. This makes it much easier to get CEng later on. Look at what the uni's industrial ties are like. You can get very good experience if...

    Peak District

I lived for a year in Derby, and spent quite some time in the Peak District at weekends. It isn't a very nice place at all, and I certainly wouldn't recommend it for a romantic getaway. Where down south are you from? Get yourself to Dorset; terrific place, particularly in the summer. Hire a...

    Best looking aircraft?

My point was that this is being done now. The X37 has completed a number of spaceflights. The Sabre currently has a few modules on rig test, with the predicted EIS for Skylon to be 2020ish. Skylon aims to be pilotless. Getting the control system to work will be very difficult (understatement)...

    Best looking aircraft?

Are unmanned aircraft worth a mention? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_X-37 Everyone has lamented the tragic demise of the American space program but, nice and quietly, the Yanks are streaking ahead of the rest of the world. Again. Unless we get there first with the Sabre and Skylon...

    Best looking aircraft?

All of mine are encompassed by http://www.luft46.com/ More specifically: http://www.luft46.com/heinkel/hewespe.html Gotta give the Germans their dues - they pretty much invented the configuration of the modern aircraft.

    Any engineers here?

It all depends on who you work for, I suppose! Some are better then others. I deliberately haven't recommended the OP any Chinese or Brazilian offshore firms. Conditions there can be quite dicey, I hear (bear in mind this is based on nothing but rumour and hearsay). Regarding the engineering...

    Any engineers here?

As others have stated, the money is offshore is superb - if you're interested in that kind of lifestyle. You spend 4ish weeks offshore on a boat or rig, and 4ish weeks onshore on holiday. I have a lot of friends who have two jobs - one offshore, the other as a guide/ski instructor/sculptor. Be...

    Any engineers here?

I've an MEng (aero) and am CEng (RAeS). I've been working for a gas turbine manufacturer for the last few years, recently moved to Norway to work in marine. An aero degree can get you lots of places, not just aircraft. Straight out of university, if you want to stay in engineering I recommend...

What is your favourite Historic quote or speech?

From the poem Alumnus Football, by Grantland Rice: "For when the One Great Scorer comes To write against your name, He writes - not that you won or lost, But how you played the game." The whole poem's well worth a read. Love the Frank Carson quote!
