The increasing inability to actually contact customer services (not OcUK)

The IRS here in the States is in a ridiculous state - only one in eleven calls are being answered - the rest are just given an answer "due to high call volume, we cannot take your call at this time, please try again later" At the same time, they are sending out notices to people saying they...

The Fermentation Station - The art of leaving things in a jar for months to make it awesome.

Nice, there was a good article on Serious Eats recently about fermenting hot sauces. I usually have a jar of simple lacto-fermented carrots & jalapenos on the go, good for snacking, on top of tacos etc. Will probably do some hot sauces this year too! @Illgresi - give that kimchi another 3-4...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

In LA everyone drives like mentalists, is in a rush and a bad mood, and no one understands the concept of rain so hopefully it'll be sunny and dry :p Outside the cities, it's pretty relaxed. Which can be bad if you're in a rush and there are two pickups driving side-by-side at 55mpg in the...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

Yeah L.A. to Santa Cruz via Hwy 1 is definitely do-able in a day - the Hwy 1 portion isn't actually that far, it's just people tend to stop frequently to take pictures, take side-roads to explore, which is why people normally suggest allowing 6-8 hours for the drive. L.A. to Morro Bay is a...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

Easy solution - fly me one-way from SB to Seattle, add me as a named driver, hand over the keys and I'll drive it back over a couple days and drop it off at SB airport, so it's only a one-way LAX-SBA hire. :p

    Road Tripping in the USA!

Could you split the hire up? It might work better also for you needs - i.e. you could hire a Mustang for say, L.A. to Sacramentoish, then change to an SUV or something a bit more rugged/comfortable for the places with more changeable weather and terrain. But yeah definitely just drop off in...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

^^ This is a v. good route, nice to fit in Yosemite etc. I'm a big fan of leaving late in the evenings particularly where the scenery is so-so. One thing I like about SB->PS is that it is usually a good drive for traffic, so long as you time it so you stay out of peak hours - it can be slow...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

Lol fair point, more like Birmingham I think, so call it a detour rather than breaking up the trip then :p Worth considering though I reckon, particularly if the trip is mainly coastal (SF-SD) without Vegas/Death Valley.

    Road Tripping in the USA!

My main suggestions are for going south from LA, it's worth considering adding Palm Springs to break up the trip to San Diego. It used to be a super sleepy old town but has become much more of a hotspot with good restaurants & bars. It's about 2.5hrs drive to PS from LAX, then PS to SD is an...

    Pressure Cooking - pro recipes/techniques

Nice, I got the same one (though Breville obv.) but won't be using it for a couple months until I've moved - more counter space \o/ The Hip pressure cooking site has some recipes which look pretty good, and more interesting than just 'cook chilli in a fraction of the time'. Also there are some...

The Official OcUK EU Referendum Exit poll (and results discussion thread)

Sad thing is, the educated, more well-off demographic that voted fairly convincingly to remain are also best placed to navigate the difficulties and take advantage of any new opportunities that Brexit presents, whereas the generally less-educated and poorer leave demographic are going to face...

The Official OcUK EU Referendum Exit poll (and results discussion thread)

Yeah depends which speech he wants to use "Whilst we are pleased with the outcome, the narrow margin in favour of Remain has been a useful exercise in determining the breadth and depth of unhappiness with the UK's current position in the EU. Taking this into account going forward, we will...

    Road Tripping in the USA!

Fly into SFO, couple days in SF. Spend 3-4 days driving PCH south to LA (Carmel/Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara), a day in Santa Monica/Hollywood then out to Vegas for the rest. If you only have a week then do the best part :p (and stop in SB for a beer with me :p )

    Road Tripping in the USA!

SB to LAX depends a lot on time of day/commuter traffic, 2hrs no traffic, 5pm on a weekday closer to 4hrs

    "Authentic" Burrito recipe

Breakfast burritos are good, scrambled egg, chopped up bacon, salsa/hot sauce and cheese. Win! Carnitas is amazing, good recipe on serious eats. Pretty much any grilled meat or fish even is good, grilled halibut or shrimp burritos are yum. Or slow cooked meats, carnitas, barbacoa etc. Add...
