Have just tried the Nokia Online firmware update program, and after downloading a new version 1.1.40en found that the N73 is at last supported :) New firmware version: V 3.0638.0.0.1 30-10-2006 RM-133 Nokia N73 (11) Loaded with no problems and seems to be working OK so far :D

It's a battery saving mode and just lets you know the phone is active :)
