Cheap Xeon as basis for workstation?

Other than the dubious legality, any other reason?

Cheap Xeon as basis for workstation?

Thanks all. Will look into Ryzen stuff too. What are ES chips that I need to avoid?

Cheap Xeon as basis for workstation?

Hi Guys, At the moment I have an AMD X4 955 Phenom unlocked to 4 cores, with 12gb ram and an SSD. Its getting a bit slow for stuff I'm doing in Visual Studio (dev) with video encoding. I have no interest in modern games so no requirement there. I was looking at either doing a G4560/B250/DDR4...

Drivers car, 4 seats, sub 10K. Opinions?

Feeling brave? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/maserati/3200/maserati-3200-gt-v8------------------2000/1987296 These actually have 4 usable seats.

    Been offered a straight swap - my F Type V8S for XK-RS - thoughts?

F-Type is surely a better car, no brainer to me. Fast XK looks like a jaaag pretending to be a sports car, F-type has a great sporting identity of its own imo, not to mention serious performance in V8 S form.

    Spec me a £250 banger

Might get a rough Omega for that? There are still plenty of Cavaliers about - surely no one pays real money for these.

    Shell Pay At Pump

Used a shell just off the M6 in Leyland with pay at pump - max was £60! Half a tank in many SUVs. Daft.

What car would OCUK suggest 1k budget

You have your pick of Alfa 156 V6s for a grand. Legendary engine. Had mine since Feb and it hasn't broke yet! Eg this epic value: http://is.gd/6v0Ftn was on for £995.

    Is there a bigger bargain?

The other thing about these mega saloons is finding somewhere to exploit the power. You'd generally rather have a Clio Cup on a b-road as they are lumbering and huge, and motorways in this country are very congested, with an S6 barely ticking over at the legal limit. So you're spending thousands...

    Need a cheapish derv :-(

I've always thought that the diesel Octavias were poor vfm - in high demand by minicabbers. Toledo/Bora or even a Passat is the way to go. If you get a 110 TDI (non-PD, pre 2001) you can run on veg oil mix if you really want to cut costs. FWIW our A6 with that engine does 44mpg with mixed...

How do you pull your handbrake up?

Makes me angry some driving instructors are telling kids right now they are wearing out the ratchet by not pressing the button in. Kwik Fit must be forever fixing handbrake ratchets.

Opinions on Audi A8 (D3) as a family barge?

Superb is ideal for what he wants really. They are seriously limo like. Twin hatch makes it much more practical for load carrying than a huge limo barge too. Much more sensible running costs. The 3.6 V6 4x4 is even 150mph fast, although very rare. Warning: kids will destroy the inside of your...

    Wheeler Dealers New Series

As I was watching it I was imagining Fox being apoplectic with rage seeing the 3 different brands of ditch finders (2 below legal tread limit) on the best car ever made.

    Might go for this Alfa....

Agree one in the OPs link seems expensive to me. I'd consider a last of the line 156 with the big power 2.4 5 pot diesel. They are proper Alfa engines and are good for big power and good economy. The 156 is rated as a better steer too due to lighter weight. The Abyss's car looks amazing.

    Considering dropping out of PhD

Aye probably true Dave, depends on your area of study. In some parts of academia everyone is so far detached from the real world they might as well live on another planet.

    Considering dropping out of PhD

I did one too. If you don't want a career in academia - quit now. You'll really miss those years in terms of career development.
