I need new workhorse laptop. Is there anything better out there than the XPS?

New build spec check please 2020

    I think I've got a plan - I'll make one good one from these two clunkers with just a few new fans and maybe a second hand GTX 1080Ti. Then buy orbitalwalsh's recommended list: 1 x Gigabyte B550M AORUS ELITE (AMD AM4) B550 Micro-ATX Motherboard= £109.99 1 x Team Group Vulcan Z T-Force 32GB...

New build spec check please 2020

Thanks folks, super speedy responses as ever :) Lots of issues: Overheating in summer - Total strip down of both machines was needed to clean filters and fans. Despite care taken they still sound like an Avro Lancaster taking off on start-up. GPU fans randomly stop Cooler fan randomly stops...

New build spec check please 2020

Hi, My name is Willowbark and it's been 5 years, 4 months and 21 days since my last build. I've had a few minor lapses in this time: Swapping out HDDs for SDD, upgrading memory and I've reseated a few processors on the sly. Really pleased with the machine from my last spec check post...

    New build spec check please

Bought it, built it, love it. Running on stock air cooler at the moment as no Corsair H105s (or similar) are in stock atm. Thanks again for the support, a real community and a great company.

    New build spec check please

Thanks for the tips. I've tried to find a match for Shuttle motherboards before without success, admittedly I was trying to keep the proprietorial ICE cooler. Not as exciting as a new new build but the price difference may tempt me. Is the H100i better than the H105? It's the right size.

    New build spec check please

I liked the look of it, but it's out of stock at the moment. I've got red and orange ones leftover from previous builds. Having the clear panel made me want to get the colours right - not sure I've got the patience for braiding.

    New build spec check please

Ta. That's worth knowing, I just need to resist the temptation to seat and re-seat it a few times.

    New build spec check please

Hi, thanks for taking the time to read my post, I'd welcome your comments and advice on this build spec please. I'm replacing an aging Shuttle and space is limited so I'm going for a microATX design. I'm not sure about the PSU wattage, I've never used a radiator cooler before & I've lost...

    E6600 2.4GHz stock for fun

Inspiring stuff! I may just buy some new kit to have a mess. I tried upping my E6600 today but the temperature is rising too fast - m/board is fine but keeping the whole thing in a shoebox in a cupboard is a killer. Keeps the office toasty warm though.

    E6600 2.4GHz stock for fun

Excellent, I'll push it a little further then. Next build will probably be a 4770K with a decent m/board

    E6600 2.4GHz stock for fun

It's been a while since I overclocked anything, but as this machine was nearing the end of it's gaming life I thought I'd give it a go for old times sake. Last one I did in anger was a Pentium 4! I didn't bother with any of the overclocking tools that I read about in the stickies, just stuck...

    Seti parp!

It brings a nostalgic tear to the eye Mr Biffa s'ah. I think I may have to peruse some schematics of the stomp-monster to regain my composure.

    Intentional destruction of life

Opinion appears to be pretty much split down the middle, just like the international community. I guess we'll keep having this debate every three years until someone accidentally pulls the plug.

    Intentional destruction of life

Smallpox has been given another three year reprieve from the hangman's gallows. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/24/who_smallpox/ "Everyone at the World Health Assembly in Geneva agreed that the virus should be destroyed at some stage". This is a truly horrific disease, but is it...

There isn't an app for that!

Cool, thanks folks. Couldn't work out why no one had thought of it - but it's just a lack of presence on Google.

There isn't an app for that!

When I first started crunching for SETI I think I was running a 266 PII. Today, my phone must have at least 600MHz sat idle at the moment - Where's my app? I'd even sit on the train messing with proteins if there was a foldit app... Somebody must know somebody - have a word!
