    Looking for a <£250 GPU

Thanks for the replies everyone, though I would prefer to go new rather than 2nd hand, mostly because I'd like it soon rather than messing around with bids or waiting for one to come up at a good price. Honestly, all other things being equal I'd prefer to get an AMD card but that's a bit more...

    Looking for a <£250 GPU

My current GPU, an R9 280X, is giving me a lot of grief in Battlegrounds so I'm looking to upgrade. It'll be going with an i5-4670K for gaming at 1080p (possibly higher res in the next few years) and I'd like to keep the budget below £250, which I know is an issue at the minute. If I'm lucky...

    Alternative medicine strikes again

As it happens the guy I was talking about works with a Russian phage group who have sent him some of the theraputic cocktails. One of the major reasons why Russian-style phage therapy would never fly in the UK is that they have no idea which phages are in the cocktails. It's a soup of things...

    Kaby Lake Worth It?

I've seen a couple of articles where people have tried installing Win7 on a Kaby laptop. The main issue seems to be that Windows won't find Kaby drivers so it just installs a generic driver for the Intel graphics. Allegedly some people have managed to manually install Skylake drivers which...

    Alternative medicine strikes again

Someone I work with studies phage therapy: the main issue with it is that if you try to treat an internal infection with it the immune system recognises it as a foreign substance and destroys it. It could be worthwhile as a topical thing, but they're nowhere near replacing antibiotics. It...

National service not a bad thing?

I think this is a bit of an issue, there are a lot of people saying "it worked for me, so why shouldn't all young people do it?", as if every young person will respond to it in the same way they did. I did a PhD and also spent a couple of years training for and running marathons, both of which...

National service not a bad thing?

You can't possibly know that. You can't possibly know that nobody will have a significantly negative experience over an entire year doing something they quite possibly didn't want to do in the first place. In that it's unfair to everyone? It makes no sense to make everyone take a year out of...

National service not a bad thing?

Your original comment was "A new perspective on life can only be a good thing no?", so you agree with me that no, a new perspective doesn't necessarily have to be a good thing? So why the desire to force all into national service? It's a big commitment for people who will gain nothing...

National service not a bad thing?

Why is that? It's entirely possible for people to see the world in a less pleasant or darker way. Other people in the thread have made comments about abusive situations: these would certainly change your view of the world but not in a good way. Just because some people do it doesn't mean all...

National service not a bad thing?

A "new outlook" isn't necessarily a "better outlook". I signed up for the UOTC when I was an undergrad, hated every moment of it and quit. I don't regret trying it, but I would have been clawing my own eyeballs out if I'd been forced to do a year of it just because older people thought younger...

National service not a bad thing?

Yeah, I discovered that when I couldn't remember who said it and Googled something vague. There was a whole page of quotes from various ancient Greeks complaining about the same things. It's interesting how each generation thinks it's a new phenomenon.

And 12 months later they're probably back to square one, national service isn't necessarily going to get them a job especially if everyone starts to have it on their CV.

    Humble Unix Bundle

They've done them for a while, there have been some really awesome programming/maker bundles in the past. They keep putting similar bundles up so they must be selling well. I always wonder that too, but at the end of the day it saves you trawling through the internet to find a decent...

    Yellowstone accident

It says in the article that they had to give up for the night because of the darkness, danger of falling in themselves and an approaching lightning storm. Even if all of the tissue hadn't totally dissolved it probably could have sunk beyond the reach of a recovery team. Not a nice way to...

    Tree of life-interactive (Biology)

Microbes have been isolated from samples taken more than 2.5 Km below the surface. There is probably a lot of stuff going on down there which we don't know about. Extremophiles are awesome things: a friend of mine has taken chunks of salt from a salt mine, sterilised the outside of it and...

Raspberry Pi - $35 Linux computer

They're like any other machines, how many things you can give them depends on how much each of those things taxes the machine. If you really want to you can set up multiple microSD cards with different purposes.

True, in which case it doesn't take long to get a fresh copy. I think you can, but the new OS will overwrite whichever OS you've already got installed. If you want to try multibooting I've heard people say good things about BerryBoot.
