hi i just got a sb600 for my d80. the zoom feature doesnt seem to work - i never see or hear anything move on the flash, and the zoom button doesnt do anything. i have tried setting zoom or on and off and it does nothing. what is it meant to do?

What is TTL? Does a proper speed flash actually make a big difference? They seem quite expensive for what is essentially just a light! :o Would external lights (not connected to camera at all, just to light up the room) be good too?
