*** NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3090 SERIES STOCK SITUATION - NO COMPETITOR DISCUSSION ***

What are you guys using to get notifications for FE drops - I'm a short way through an unreal course and could really use the extra memory!

    Buying from auction

My father in law bought us a forester 2009 from an auction with 90k on the clock for £2k. It broke down on the way back from the auction! Cost as much again to get it working, and its still a dog. Avoid the high mileage I guess I'm saying. Case in point from the post above ;)

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

Nice, are you going raid with those? Let us know how the nas does.

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

Its great, pretty idiot proof (thankfully). I'm not running vms or anything complex, but it handles a mixture of sfp and GBe just fine, and is completely silent - was a bit worried about the small fans but no issues there. Front leds are easy to read and tell if something is running at full...

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

I'm working on animation projects, atm with one other, but hopefully bringing more people in. An element of future proofing involved I guess, but we all need to access the data, and copy/stream large files to/from pretty regularly.

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

For storage have a: QNAP TS-473-8G NAS server QNAP LAN-10G2SF-MLX network adapter And single 2Tb mx500 ssd atm, have some older raid hard drives to add in. Just got a switch to be able to connect more workstations, which is: QNAP QSW-1208-8C 10GbE Unmanaged Switch - and have twin sfp+ cables...

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

Next step is nvme storage when prices come down a little further.

Why is 10 Gb Ethernet still so expensive?

Got to say I'm loving my 10Gb network now its up and running. Can copy a 5Gb file at 1.1Gb /s :) Being able to scrub through HD/4k footage/multiple input sources for comp is so nice, without having to localise everything.

    *** AMD ThreadRipper ***

Thanks, appreciate the input! I'm squeezing the last drops out of a 5930k atm, which has been decent with single-threaded tasks, but struggles with simulations. Looking at a 60 or 70, and asrock creator for the 4 dual pcie slots (render a fair bit on gpu as well).

    *** AMD ThreadRipper ***

Considering a workstation upgrade, is now a good time to buy a threadripper? I realise there's zen 2 refresh of ryzen parts, and zen 3 coming maybe early next year, haven't heard anything about threadrippers specifically though. Also wondering why everything is out of stock at OC? Except the...

    fast storage for 2 workstations

I'm looking to set up some fast storage space for two workstations, will be compositing 4k footage and gpu rendering/streaming texture data which gets quickly bottlenecked on a 1gb lan. Not sure if I need a switch or not, would it be possible to get a nas with dual 10gbe connections and just...

    5930k to 6950x - worth it?

Thanks for the feedback all, some good points - especially this one. It does feel like an expensive upgrade for 4 more cores in comparison with 10 more.

    5930k to 6950x - worth it?

Been umming and erring about upgrading my cpu, it's a 3d workstation with a bunch of GPUs in for rendering, don't play games at all. Just started runnings simulations in houdini which could use some extra cores, and not sure if it's worth upgrading just the CPU or looking at an entirely new...

Why does the UK hate cyclists?

Sadly this thread seems to mirror the increase in inconsiderate and impatient driving I've experienced lately. Since when did people on bikes stop being human beings with families and loved ones?

PCIe SSD compatibility with a motherboard

+1. I have a regular 1Tb ssd and its great to have the extra space. But I'm not sure I'd notice if it was even faster, does everything I need right now.

How many of you are going to get a Broadwell-E CPU?

Yup, more than enough to complain about with these blimmin intel chips. I bought a 5930k and x99 last year thinking that there would be a decent upgrade path in the future, but it will be years before 10 cores is available at a reasonable budget at this rate. Intel seem to be intentionally...
