I discovered the same thing when I bought and installed my WD Gold 12TB. It has quietened down a lot since doing the first full indexing of the drive.

I think it was doing the first lot of search indexing. It's quitened down now and hasn't been that noisy since that day. It did have to index around 4TB worth of data, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised! It's in one of the Phanteks P600s drive cages. Not sure if that maybe also made it worse...

How much worse is the airflow in this and the 5000D compared to the airflow version? This is a case I have considered - it looks gorgeous. Only problem is I have no NAS solution right now, and I have 4 3.5" HDDs. Seems all PCs don't far in more than two HDDs these days.

Yeah, the space between the side and the fans is likely to be more of an issue. I think you can open the side panel if needed. I would try it out and then see.

I have a question about the vertical triple slot. Do you think there is enough room to fit an RTX 3090 in there vertically with a Noctua D15s? This is the exact same setup I'm considering.
