The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

I had a dram in my advent calendar… I wasn’t impressed really; it was very smokey and that’s not the kind of Scotch I enjoy.

    ***The Official OcUK Lego Thread***

Finally got the Bond Aston Martin DB5 finished yesterday. I have to say that I was more impressed by it than I was expecting to be!

Plane Spotters / Flight Radar Thread

Isn’t there a fairly sizeable US / European joint exercise going on at the moment?

    ***The Official OcUK Lego Thread***

Yes, I do like the Speed Champions sets. I’ve got quite a few of them and I really like how they manage to get the spirit of the cars into the little models.

The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

I agree. I definitely have a taste for sherry cask finished single malts and also really do not like the heavily plated malts. :D

    Alternate to Lightroom (macOS)

Yeah, I use Classic, as I’ve no desire at all to waste the pitiful upstream bandwidth we get here on uploading photos to Adobe.

What are the specs of your programming machine?

i7 (though my home machine is only an i5 and that’s fine, despite me cheaping out with it :D ) 32GB RAM 1TB SSD. / NVMe (home machine has some additional spinning rust storage too, but keep code stuff on the NVMe) 2x 4K monitors (laptop screen and additional screen for work laptop / 2 monitors...

Need to make Website but not sure on language.

I agree with a lot of neur0maniak’s comments above. (Though not about PHP :D .Net all the way here!) To go further with the app comment, you can even create a minimum app that is basically a wrapper around a website. In terms of security, yes it is down to you, and I’d suggest that a website...

Need to make Website but not sure on language.

C# follows quite readily from C++. You can even use C# for front end dev these days, with Microsoft’s Blazor. As above though, depending just how complicated you need to make things, just using MVC (or Razor Pages) might give you a solution without getting over involved in front end tech.

    Bootstrap for web development

Both... It’s sometimes dictated by the system you’re integrating with. Personally, I’d just choose JSON, but it’s not always something you get to choose.

    NAS Drives

What are the NAS drives of choice at the moment? I’ve built a new homelab server and one of its functions is going to be to be a NAS, probably with 5 or 6 drives, running RAID Z2 (aware RAID isn’t a backup, this is just part of my overall backup solution...). Do I “need” NAS drives, or will...

    Bootstrap for web development

C# and .Net Core usually. SQL Server mostly for data storage, though have occasionally used other kinds of storage. REST or SOAP services for the integrations. JSON or XML for the data feeds.

Move or Clone C: to new M2 SSD, How?

Personally, I’d always reinstall after putting in a new motherboard.

    Bootstrap for web development

Systems integration mostly... APIs, website to/from ERP, middleware, data feeds, etc.

Move or Clone C: to new M2 SSD, How?

As above... Macrium Reflect. I did just what you are looking to do a few months ago with it and it could hardly have been more straightforward.

    Bootstrap for web development

I do way more backend work than front end, but Bootstrap is my go to option if I do need to stick a quick UI on something.

The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Very nice! Kyrö were exhibiting at the Berlin Craft Spirits Festival last March (back in the dim and distant days when you could travel...). They do some very good stuff. The sample of their Rye Whiskey was excellent, as is their Dark Gin (have a bottle of that here that we brought home with us).

    Starlink - anyone using it?

Very tempted to give Starlink a go. We get about 14 Mbits/s down / 1 Mbit/s up ADSL2 that’s extremely flaky at the best of times here and I can’t see that improving much anytime soon.
