No education, no experience, need a job!

It's going to be hard, no doubt, but it will be a lot easier if you can get some schooling done. There are a number of sixth form colleges and universities that offer GCSE courses for adults, often in the evening. You'll find it a lot easier to get your foot in the door of a job that you'd...

Video interviews, did you have notes on your screen?

I interviewed someone a few weeks ago for the first time since COVID hit. Our hiring freeze is over, thankfully, so we're back to expanding out our team. I have to say, I really don't care if people are looking at notes or not during interviews, as long as it doesn't seem like they're reading...

    Calling Team 10

Okay, for those who were curious. I had large boosts over two weekends, that rapidly shot me up various charts. I was testing our new cloud hardware "shape" (configuration) that was just announced, which features 8 * Nvidia A100 GPUs in them, linked in their usual hybrid-cube shape. Our...

    Who uses a financial advisor?

Honestly, I wish I'd seen one sooner. I should never have put this off as long as I did. Learned a lot, grew a lot, made better financial decisions.

    Who uses a financial advisor?

I have a financial advisor that I meet with quarterly. They've helped me out in a few ways. I live in the US so this is slightly different from how things are in the UK: Helped ensure we maximise usage of tax free / deferred funds, like IRAs. Helped ensure we've got solid life insurance...

    Planning for Retirement

Nothing, honestly. We're fairly frugal types already. If anything our expenditure has increased since we started seeing a financial advisor, since we've started funds for our kid's college educations (yay USA). We just weren't making effective use of what we had. It wasn't in any tax...

Nope, nope, nope, nope. Don't fall for that trap. They're not paying you for it, your mental health gets impacted (whether you recognise it or not), and your productivity overall diminishes. There are numerous studies that show how overall productivity drops when people are working more than...

    Planning for Retirement

Wife and I got sorted out with a financial adviser about 4 years ago. Totally shook up our finances and got us in to a much better place, as well as getting good life insurance policies etc. set up. We were doing a good job of squirrelling away money, but a bad job of making that money...

Slack has a built in thing where it tells you what time-zone people are in, nice and clearly. People still ping me at all ridiculous hours of the day expecting me to respond, particularly our support org who seem to have me incorrectly pegged as a person with the most clue about everything.

    Calling Team 10

Occasionally I get asked to prove stability / reliability of machines with GPUs in them. F@H makes for an easy way to both make a machine work, and actually provide some value. 6,425,705 from the last 24 hours from what I left running over this long weekend (I'm in the US), under my more usual...

    What is your job?

In my experience you get that almost everywhere. You'll be fighting "that's how we've always done it" pretty much routinely, and politics (small p) seems a sad and almost inevitable fact of life. I do pretty well where I am, but we're a small enough operation that anyone playing politics would...

    What is your job?

Senior Sysadmin. Pay is pointless to mention given US and UK disparity. Working Towards: Nothing specific as such, I'm happy and settled in this job / career type. Sysadmin is a bit of a wide and changing field that mostly I try to focus on where this field is going and trying to get...

    Forum Member Spotting ...

Guilty as charged. I've been having e-mails read out on the show for a while, figured I'd try something different this time around. As for meeting people, I've met a good number at Alton Towers meets, Swansea Christmas bash and a few other events. Can highly recommend going to them.

Good acoustic song to end the night with

Sit Down - James. Especially when folk are drunk, so you can laugh at those who attempt to sit down and stand up every time you sing "Sit down"
